Portland State Fires Nigel Burton

Getting rid of Burton is a good move, IMO. PSU fans seem surprised since he had another year on his contract & there are rumors about football getting canned in the near future. Maybe they've got June Jones ready to go or something?

SuperHornet's Athletics Hall of Fame includes Jacksonville State kicker Ashley Martin, the first girl to score in a Division I football game. She kicked 3 PATs in a 2001 game for J-State.

Jody Sears has already coached half the teams in the Big Sky. That's my prediction.

Fun quotes about Burton on eGriz…

What a mess that place is. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.
Every D Lineman in the BSC has something to be thankful for tomorrow....
I heard the AD didn't fire him. I heard they brought in an AD from the other side of town and had him Blindside Burton 3 times with a crackback block until he could't coach anymore.

Early list of candidates for the job. I'm unsure how accurate it is, if it is just a wish list or what. Wiewel supposedly met with the football team earlier this month and voiced his support for the continuation of football at PSU. I think this is a strong indicator towards that. If Burton would have stayed, more speculation would have been added about football disappearing after next year. As no coach would want to come in to a situation where they are out after a year or two, I think this shows Wiewel's support for football staying at PSU.

If they were willing to buy out his final year, I'd think that's for at least one of two reasons: 1) They have a better &/or higher profile candidate they think they can get now. 2) There was about to be some sort of revolt or exodus against Burton.

I see that, grizza. I have no clue what happened. They must have disappeared from the Internet or something....

Looks like they did. Three were sports icons designed by Willie from eGriz, but apparently his site went under, taking those icons with them. I'll replace the Ashley Martin pic....

The university had been subsidizing the football program to the tune of $800k or so a year while the university itself ran into the red as well. The new mandate is that football needs to become self-sufficient. Since nobody comes to Portland State games, that's going to be a tall order without playing two FBS teams every year.

A list of coaching candidates and general info on both the AD search and coaching search, courtesy of Kerry Eggers of the Portland Tribune.

The first half is about both searches. The rest is other Oregon sports topics.
