Alcorn State

I've been wondering how good this team is. Right now I'm watching them dismantle Alabama State. 17-0 in the first quarter and it could very well be 21-0 except a guy dropped a pass on third down where if he'd have caught it they'd have had first down deep in Alabama State territory on a drive they started on their own five yard line. They settled for a field goal.

They came into tonight 4-1 with the only loss being by 26-20 to Southern Mississippi. The Braves rushed for 295 yards in that game. Yes I know Southern Mississippi is not a good FBS team but that is still kind of impressive.

Their other four games were two wins over D-IIIs by 55-7 and 55-10 along with a 52-9 win over Mississippi Valley State and 56-16 over Southern. Right now it looks like they're well on their way to a big blowout win over Alabama State. Driving again in Alabama State territory.

Weak schedule but I don't see anybody in the SWAC being able to play with these guys. Interesting that they have the first ever White head coach in the SWAC. He was a DB coach for Marshall when the Thundering Herd won the title in 1996 and was defensive coordinator at Southern Miss for a while back when Southern Miss was a reasonably good I-A/FBS team that could give SEC schools a battle.

Alcorn State first down inside the Alabama State 30 now. I figure it's about to be 24-0 in the second quarter.

Seems pretty definitive who the best team in the SWAC is…

The Braves would've won in a massacre if they weren't so turnover prone.

ASU(purple) outgained ASU(black) 608-253 and outrushed them 391-48.

The Braves have 5 blowout wins and a close loss to an FBS despite being minus-6 in turnover margin.

Yes. This is one of those times I especially wish the SWAC participated in the playoffs. Most of the time I just wish they participated because the SWAC has a large fan base. This time I'd honestly like to see how Alcorn State would do. I know it's early and maybe I'll end up looking foolish but right now I'd be shocked if Alcorn State doesn't go undefeated in SWAC play and win the conference championship. In fact I kind of expect them to blow everybody they face in SWAC play out. So I'm wondering how they'd do in the playoffs.

I know that there was a lot of national interest in Alcorn State when Steve McNair was there. But this is a much better Alcorn State team relative to the rest of I-AA/FCS, I think. MUCH better. Kind of a shame they probably won't get a chance to test themselves.
