Chuck South vs Campbell

Chuck South finally woke up in the 2nd half and won it 34-10. Campbell is a pretty tough team for a non-scholarship team.

No, Campbell is not a pretty tough team, even for a non-scholarship team. They have 18 total wins in 6 seasons and have never beaten a DI scholarship team. I saw a play last night where the running back and the man in motion ran into each other - it was like watching a circus.

This ends the Buc's grueling opening schedule of Point, Newberry, and Campbell. Now time to play some DI scholarship teams.

+1.

I actually started watching this game in the 3rd quarter when I saw that Campbell was ahead at halftime. That by itself was hilarious.

That is an area of concern for sure. If CSU wants to take that next step up and become that third team in the Big South that can be a consistent player for the conference title and consistently rank in the top 25, they need to dominate in games like this against bad or lower division teams.

I drove past the "stadium" during half time last night. The stands looked pretty empty and there wasn't much action underneath.

CSU has had a long history if often playing up or down to their opponents level. Theyll struggle with Shorter College....then beat Coastal and The Citadel. Their 2005 championship year they beat Coastal and Liberty....and got blown out by Presbyterian and struggled in wins over Savannah St and West Virginia Wesleyan.

Typical Bucs. Now lets see who they play "up" to this year and upset haha.

I'm gonna guess CSU doesn't beat Coastal this year.

Oh!!! What a treat, VMI jumps up from Big South/SoCon irrelevance to say "REMEMBER US GUYS, WE EXIST" :twocents: What conference are you guys in now, since you fled the SoCon b/c you couldn't compete, then fled the Big South because you THOUGHT you'd compete, but were just as bad.....where ya'll at now???

Probably not. CCU is just a more solid program than CSU, not doubt about that. But, we can compete with them, and we have won our share of those matchups. CCU and Liberty are no doubt the cream of the crop in the Big South. But CSU, and Gardner Webb, are solid challengers in that 3rd/4th spot, and both have won the conference before. Not everyone can be the top dog. Its why there is only one champion per year.

The SoCon is a huge step up from the Big suck. Before we left the Socon VMI dominated BSC garbage pretty much 24/7...admittedly the league isn't now what it was back then with the loss of App State and GaSo, but it's still much better competition than the BSC ever was.

I've said this before, in 3-5 years VMI will be much better than anyone in the Big Suck, Coastal and Liberty notwithstanding. No one besides those 2 schools mentioned can hold a flame to Chattanooga, Furman, hell even Samford and Wofford. Even WCU is looking good this year. I mean there is a reason that Coastal and Liberty are trying to bolt ASAP.

The "Big Suck" went what, 9-2 vs SoCon last year? And, is it just a military school thing? VMI and The Citadel are always talking shit...to people who beat them. VMI was a doormat in the Big South. And you call it the "Big Suck"? Well, kid, you guys were right there at the bottom of it.

Cant hold a flame to who? Gardner Webb beat Furman AND Wofford last year, right? The SoCon champ, Furman, needed a last second miracle to beat the Big South's worst team last year. And they lost to Coastal and GWU. YOUR CHAMPION....would've finished what, 4th? 5th? in the "Big Suck" last year?

But you know, all that talk about Coastal and Liberty and Wofford and Furman and GWU and Samford...ignores the point: VMI was a doormat before it left the SoCon, remained a doormat their entire time in the Big South, and is still a doormat in the newer, weaker SoCon (Which, BTW, Jeff Sagarin ranks about dead even with the Big South).

Im starting to think VMI fans are even worse than Citadel fans. At least there have been several years when Citadel was finishing at or near the top of the SoCon and wasn't an eternal doormat.

Oh, and you say in 3-5 years VMI will be better than anyone in the "Big Suck" (Conference you guys couldn't hang with, ironically).

How? What will VMI do different that they haven't done....in the 35 years since their last winning season?

Big difference in being good and being tough. They shut our running game down in the first half and anytime you shut Reyes down I call that tough. Second half a completely different story.

Great point. And the "non-scholarship" thing is a bit misleading. Division 1-AA "non-scholarship" teams provide a LOT of grant-in-aid stuff that the scholarship schools do not (because they don't have to). Jim Harbaugh had a pretty damn good "non-scholarship" team at U of San Diego. Davidson and Jacksonville have also put out some tough squads, despite "non-scholarship status".

But you know how it is. Some fans of some fanbases are just too arrogant to see past their own bull.

**BTW, this was the ultimate trap game. A short-week Thursday night game, vs a team everyone assumed they'd roll over, 1 week prior to one of the biggest games to ever happen at CSU field when crosstown rival (even if they wont admit it) Citadel comes to town? Yeah, prime recipe for coming out flat. And they did for 1 half. Seemed the players were more interested in getting to their weekend off (what 18-23 yr old college kids aren't, especially football players who are on lock down during the season).

As a sidenote to your comments bucs90...VMI won a grand total of I believe once over Liberty in their entire history in the Big South and three times in the entire history of the series

Yep. Liberty and Coastal are the top dogs in the Big South, and have been for a while. CSU and Gardner-Webb in some years have made it interesting, and even won the thing a few times. I just haven't ever understood fans who talk shit to or about....leagues or teams that they have not succeeded against, or have lost to recently. Its why a CSU fan should NEVER talk shit to or about Liberty :ohno:

To hear a VMI guy talking trash about the Big South.....wow.

Campbell doesn't. This is fact and in no way debatable.

Campbell and San Diego are thousands of miles apart in more ways than just geographically.

Anytime you try to justify Campbell as "tough" in any way, shape, form, anything you lose...instantly

26 years of football...still don't have 100 wins.

Since bringing football back they have not beaten a D1 scholarship team, have been outscored 1457-2253, and are 17-50.

The only thing that's tough about Campbell is the coaches convincing their players they won't lose by 30 every Saturday

Did you play football in college? People would be shocked how close teams actually are in talent level, even 1-10 vs 10-1 teams. Its more often than not the difference of 4-5 key players making big time plays. "Good" teams have those handful of players who win games. "Tough" teams are ones that may be phsycial, strong, great effort guys....but don't have an never will have those big time playmakers.

If you played (and you may have) you'd know teams like that. That you should beat, and end up beating. But they play hard, are physically strong, etc. And if you are the better team, one of your 4-5 big gamebreakers will make the plays that break it open. And after you'll all talk about how "tough" that crappy team was on the field, even if you beat them 42-10.

If you didn't play...well, you see only scores. And that makes the context of the discussion a lot different.

Ok, that may be the case, I don't know. Im not on the admissions board or dept of financial aid at Campbell. Charleston Southern, before being fully funded at 65 schollys, did grants. Its as easy as giving a "Charleston Southern University Grant" worth the value of tuition. Basically hitting "delete" on the tuition balance.

So you are saying Davidson and Jacksonville have never fielded respectable football teams? They weren't App State or Montana. But they have some good teams from the past (Davidson is awful now though).

EDIT: Ok, you are inaccurate on the grant thing at Campbell: http://www.campbell.edu/archive/catalog ... _info.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

They do in fact offer grant-in-aid packages. Almost every college in America, except the service academies Army, Navy, USAFA, offer them, so I was surprised a bit to hear Campbell may not. But, they do. I'd assume most football players there are going to school on grants that they don't repay.

Oh excuse me, guess I can't talk crap about an insignificant baptist college that has a 4,000-seat aluminium bleacher "stadium", has had six winning seasons in their history, and has won a grand total of 1 conference championship in a 5-team league (by way of a fluke chokejob by CCU). Last season was arguably the best team in your program's history, and you couldn't even win the conference. And you're trying to tell me that VMI is an eternal doormat?

Despite all the d we've sucked in the past 30 years, we still have 7 conference championships in what has historically been the toughest conference in FCS football...still waiting for Chuck Baptist to capture their next.
And for the record I've never claimed that VMI has been superior to anyone in recent history...but you, my friend, have an arrogant, holier-than-thou attitude. Which is quite hilarious, given that Chuck South is largely irrelevant in the scope of FCS football and will always be Coastal's redheaded stepbrother.

We started football in 91 fella. We have had more success in the last 10 years than u had in last 35.

Arrogant? Ha. Hardly. You dont read my posts much. We arr absolutely a middle of the pack Big South team far below Liberty and Coastal. And we know why.

But why VMI and Citadel talk so much shit is baffling.

bucs90, your continued put down of other schools, DOES NOT MAKE CSU look better, it just makes you look more and more insecure about your team.

Let your team do the talking on the field, I'm sure they wish you'd just be quiet.
