Kollmorgen to start for UNI

CEDAR FALLS | Mark Farley wants a quarterback who can execute play after play, not just once in a while.

Thus, Sawyer Kollmorgen once again owns the starting job for Northern Iowa.

Farley announced Monday that Kollmorgen will take the field first when UNI travels to Kinnick Stadium for the 2014 season opener with Iowa. Brion Carnes will be the backup, although he's likely to be used in some way, shape or form, according to the Panthers' head coach.

The starter, however, will be Kollmorgen, the 6-foot-2, 215-pound junior from Jenks, Okla.. He was the No. 1 quarterback for 20 consecutive games, through 2012 and most of the 2013 season. Then a concussion sustained at Illinois State sidelined Kollmorgen for the balance of last year. Carnes, the senior transfer from Nebraska, stepped in and led UNI to wins in its final three Saturdays.

Go Panthers!

The couple of Iowa games I've been to, had a guy behind me rocking back and forth in his seat saying fumble, over and over when the Iowa opponent had the ball. The guy is probably still there, 20 years later.

Iowa 42-10.

On paper, Iowa should win this game, just like any P5 football program should over an FCS opponent, given the extra scholarships and the tens of millions of extra dollars in their budget.

But the game isn't played on paper, and I think UNI has a fair shot at an upset.
In any case, I hope it is an entertaining game w/o major injuries.

Iowa will annihilate UNI. Make no bones about it.

The key to the game is if and when Farley will pull his key players to save them from injury. Happens every year - a key player with no quality backup gets hurt and is out for the season.

Mark my words, this loss will the keep the panthers out of the playoffs, again.

I still have visions of 2009 though. UNI has proven they can wipe the field with the boys in Ames but to do it to the Hawkeyes would put a big black eye on the BIG 10 early on. I'll be rooting for the panthers!

CEDAR FALLS, Ia. – Iowa should expect to see Northern Iowa quarterback Sawyer Kollmorgen in Saturday's season opener for both teams. The Hawkeyes should expect to see Panther quarterback Brion Carnes, too.

It's a two-quarterback system with a twist.

All that's known for sure: Kollmorgen will start when the teams meet at 11 a.m. inside Kinnick Stadium.

Carnes, who played wide receiver at Nebraska before transferring, parked under center for the final three games a season ago after Kollmorgen suffered a concussion.

When asked if Carnes — who also returned kicks last season — could play a position other than quarterback against Iowa, a wry smile crept across Panther coach Mark Farley's face.

"Yeah, there's a possibility of anything," he said.

Carnes is the purple and gold X-factor against Iowa, a team some feel could contend for the Big Ten's West Division title.

UNI has the talent to beat Iowa. Some questionable play calling with that talent may have cost the game.
