Native American leaders in the state of North Dakota are calling on the University of North Dakota to take swift, harsh disciplinary action against a handful of students who wore vaguely insensitive T-shirts during an off-campus party.

“Expel them,” demanded David Archambault, chairman of the Standing Rock Tribe, in a statement to Bakken Today. “Expel the students. Zero tolerance.”



I am at a loss for words.

It was an off-campus party, were they arrested for this? Did someone see the shirt and call the cops?

I have a very soft spot in my heart for the plight of the tribes but JFC with this.

You need to ask yourself, "How can I hire more Sioux, or diversify my friends to include some Sioux, in order to understand their plight?"

You should take steps to drag my generation and your grandparents’ generation, and the generation of these students, along with you in the fight against racism.

Maybe that starts simply in your own family, when grandpa tells that off-colored joke at Thanksgiving, or you’ve got an aunt that talks about "those people."

Well, you can politely inform them that they’re talking about your friends...but only if you have a more diverse group of friends.

They weren't arrested.

Since this wasn't an official school function, I doubt anything could actually happen. Maybe something in the student conduct code covers this, but it wouldn't lead to expulsion. And this is a public school, so any punishment could get struck down in court I would think. The guys with the shirts are clearly dudebro douchebags, but they shouldn't (& likely won't) be punished in any official capacity.

I wonder if they are so outraged because it hits a little too close to home...

The shirts are cheesy and perhaps in poor taste, but even under the strictest codes of conduct at private schools (and UND is public) you still couldn't get expelled for that. They'd have to be cited for under aged drinking or something explicitly illegal for the university's conduct office to get involved.

It's almost pointless to talk about how stupid this kind of stuff is anymore. Let's face it. The United States has just become stupid.

Um....another "non issue." Were the shirts offensive? Depends. Should they be expelled or disciplined? No. Are they jack ass college students? Of course. Non issue, spend your energy elsewhere.
