NCAA board endorses more power for big schools

"The NCAA's board of directors took the first step toward shifting power to the five largest football conferences on Thursday, endorsing a 57-page plan that calls for giving 65 of the nation's biggest schools more autonomy in how to fund scholarships ... schools in the ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and SEC could implement some rules on their own and would get more voting power over legislation that would affect every NCAA member school ..."

" ...the list of autonomous items has not been finalized, it is likely to include issues such as providing money to students that goes uncovered by traditional scholarships; expanded insurance, including coverage for pro prospects; more resources for academic and career counseling; and funding to help athletes' families travel to NCAA tournaments..."

" ...Still to be determined is how, or if, the other 27 Division I conferences might apply measures approved through the autonomy rules..."

Amazing huh. the one football post of the day gets no comments ;)

Not really sure how much this changes football, the bigs are so far ahead of everyone else in money, etc.
But basketball is a different subject.

BTW, I need to check out local 420. any idea where the meetings are held :thumb:

I've said before that I don't understand why the big schools didn't just leave the NCAA a long time ago. The NCAA needs them a lot more than they need the NCAA. They could form their own organization and do just fine. The NCAA SHOULD give them more autonomy. For many years the "small" schools have been functioning basically as parasites sucking on the big schools for sustenance.

So the Pac-12 can dictate to the MAC how they do business? That doesn't make any sense....

The big schools are big because of the NCAA. Of course they NEED the NCAA. The NCAA makes them what they are.

I don't know if you're kidding or not. But, while it may be true that the NCAA helped get them to where they are, the "big schools" don't need the NCAA now. If all the schools in the American Athletic, ACC, Big 10, Big 12, Pac 10, and SEC along with Notre Dame announced tomorrow that they're leaving the NCAA and forming their own association the major TV networks would go right with them.
