CSU Buccaneers Compete in First Scrimmage of Spring Practice
CSU quarterbacks Kyle Copeland and Austin Brown moved the offense efficiently for much of the day, and made several big plays on the ground and through the air. After struggling early, the Bucs defense responded with some stops late in the action.
"I felt like we smacked the defense around a little bit in the beginning but they responded a little bit late and did some good things the last three or four drives," (Charleston Southern Head Coach, Jamey) Chadwell said. "I like to see the back and forth." "You never want it to be a one-sided scrimmage," Chadwell continued. "You want to see some touchdowns but you also want to see some stops and we saw both of those things. Both groups come out of it feeling good about it but also saying we could have done a lot of things better."
Copeland and Brown split the repetitions at quarterback, and both had CSU's spread option attack on the roll at times. Sophomore running back Michael Holloway had many strong runs both on the inside and the perimeter
Copeland once again showcased his ability as a runner, but made three strong throws to account for the first score of the day. He hit Chris Theodore over the middle for a 20-yard gain, hooked up with Kevin Glears on a pair of screen passes and then connected with Glears for a touchdown on a pretty touch pass in the corner of the end zone.
Brown exhibited the strong throwing arm that made him a member of Conference USA's All-Freshman Team in 2012. The UAB transfer connected with Ethan Adams in traffic over the middle on one play, and found Adams deep down the left sideline for a 60-yard touchdown late on in the drive.
Head Coach, Jamey Chadwell said, "They've both done some good things. Austin throws the ball really well and runs it pretty well too. He's seeing different looks and trying to learn how to make good decisions and get us in certain situations. Kyle continues to grow in the position as well because he is still a young guy trying to figure things out."
On the defensive side, senior linebacker Gabe Middlebrook registered a sack and sophomore safety DJ Curl made several strong tackles in space. The defense, which developed an aggressive, passionate style of play under coordinator Chad Staggs last year, also forced several fumbles.
