Southern Conference celebrates Mercer's upset of Duke
In their first year of football in 70 years, the Bears were picked 11th in the Pioneer League.
They finished 10-2 overall, and 6-2 in league play with a roster dominated by redshirt freshmen.
The head coach of Mercer is Bobby Lamb. Yup -- He of the 67-40 record (.626) at Furman as head coach, leading the Paladins to winning records in eight of his nine seasons, while making four trips to the I-AA playoffs.
I smell Vermin meat on the grill.

Agreed. That was sweet. There have been some pretty good performances by FCS programs in the tourney. Hell, I even rooted for North Dakota State!

I hope it's everything you ever dreamed the SoCon could be!

Well the one thing we know. Basketball will be better
and if 2013 was the new norm for ASU and GSU, football will be too

buh buh buh but ... the Hillbillys were in transition, and that 4-8 record does not reflect the tremendous strides made in the football program.
There were only 3 convictions and 2 dismissals

That's OK Vermin....Mercer Bears can't wait to take you down.
Bobby Lamb will have a field day. Revenge for him will be sweet.

Criticize me if you wish but is it too bold for me to think that, with the success we had this year and Elon + Davidson ditching, VMI and Mercer will dominate SoCon basketball for the next few years at least?
Mercer finished w/ a 74 RPI and VMI a 167; no other Socon team staying was under 200 except Wofford.

It is hard to imagine VMI dominating anything
I think Mercer had a team full of seniors. Not sure what they had behind them but honestly I think the three teams you mentioned will be at the top at least year one, if not longer.

Hey we weren't talking about Furman, we were talking about VMI

and I did agree, kinda sorta, with your fellow VMIer on basketball.
Besides, we are more than ready to win number 21 in row against the Keydets in football next year

Final RPI charts:

Big south, in a rare season, finished ahead of the SoCon, by two slots.......I've seen seasons past where the SoCon finished 4-5 slots ahead of the Big South......

That may be the "reason" he will transfer, but he will still be a transfer.
Do you doubt for one second he won't be a member of another team next season? I don't know if he will sit out a year or move down to DII, but he
WILL transfer.
