Winthrop University is sizing up the value of fielding a football team at the South Carolina school.
The Herald of Rock Hill reports that athletic director Tom Hickman shared an internal report with Winthrop's top leaders on Sunday. It says the public university of around 6,000 students would need major donations and millions of dollars in borrowing to start a football program. The report says a new team could boost the university's enrollment growth goal.

You know, South Carolina has 4 million people. We have two big time FBS programs and 7 FCS programs. I am usually one that says the more football the better, but geez.
Next thing you know Converse will be fielding a football team

You need to add SC State to this part of the list.

Just a few miles away - Ft. Mill and Rock Hill are kind of SC-based bedroom communities for CLT.

Nope, it's located in Rock Hill, about 30 miles away from the border.

You're thinking of
Win-GATE (or, Win-get as we call it round cheer)
It's out there in Union County off Hwy 74 ... the central hub of progressive education in NC

So you have 4 million people in your state. We have atleast 7 football schools in Montana with only 1million people. However all small time schools that does make a difference I suppose

Iowa has between 35 and 40 football schools, with more startingin the next couple years, and a population of 3 million

I think the difference in Montana is that you don't have a Clemson and a Carolina two top 20 teamsin FBS land.

Why?
EVERY school should have men's football. Heck, every school should have women's football, too. That would totally take care of Title IX issues....

Yes but, to be fair, only 2 of those are NCAA (5 others are NAIA), and football is the only real popular sport in your state.

Because they don't have an alumni base or a market to support it. The school was a women's teachers college for almost a hundred years and, even today, the student body is 68% female, a fact that they are just fine with. Add to this the fact that they are located in Rock Hill, SC -- essentially a suburb of Charlotte, NC -- where their natural market is already awash in FBS programs (UNC, Charlotte, South Carolina, etc.,) as well as the Carolina Panthers. There is no way on earth they could make a dent in all that noise. Further, they don't really want football. A lot of people want them to want it but it's clear that they just really don't. Their president and board have cited rising costs as reasons for not adding the sport on multiple occasions in the last ten years.

UNI was a teachers college with a 80-90% womens enrollment until about 1950...ish. Hell, we were the Iowa State Teachers College until 1961...and before that the Iowa State Normal School. Also known as the State College of Iowa for 6 years before becoming UNI in 1967
Even today UNI is known for being a teachers (and accounting/business) college with about 55-65% womens enrollment....in a state of 3 million (in a city of 35-40K and an enrollment of 13k) less than 2 hours from a B10 and B12 school with enrollments of about 50k and 30k respectively with living alumni bases of well into 7, if not 8, figures.
We do pretty okay with football...and athletics in general.

JMU is over 60% female too, not a bad 1-AA FB program, with UVa 55 miles away, VPI 120 miles away, WVU 160 miles away......

Ok then, they shouldn't do it because they are Winthrop. Winthrop football just doesn't sound right.
