ackson State brought back one of its own by naming former JSU wide receiver Harold Jackson as its new head football coach.

Now, the administration hopes the Tiger tradition returns with him.

Jackson replaces Rick Comegy, who was fired Dec. 18 despite back-to-back Southwestern Athletic Conference championship appearances.

On Monday, JSU Athletic Director Vivian Fuller introduced Jackson as one who understands the culture of Jackson State and can reconnect with its community, abilities that the school found lacking in Comegy.

“This is someone who is going to bring an experienced flavor to Jackson State University,” Fuller said. “It is something that our football players will be able to look up to.”

Despite a long coaching career, Jackson, 68, said the job made sense. “This is home,” he said.

“If it wasn’t for Jackson State, I’d still be in LA. Jackson State is where I was born and raised,” Jackson said. “I can’t take any other school other than Jackson State. I’m a Jacksonian.”

Jackson, who played at JSU from 1963-67, spent 16 years in the NFL and has a coaching resume that includes assistant coaching stops at Baylor and Kentucky and the NFL. This is his first college head coaching job since his time at Division II Benedict College, where he coached 1995-96 and compiled a 6-12 record.

Most recently, he was an assistant coach with the Sacramento Mountain Lions in the Untied Football League in 2012.
68???

3 years, $260k per. There are worse situations to come out of retirement, especially in this economy.
