Upset alert???? CHarleston Southern @ Appalachian State

I never thought I'd be thinking this back in August. But I have to wonder and dream now.........is there an upset alert in Boone this week? App State has had a few struggles this year and lost a couple. Charleston Southern is off to a 4-0 start with a win over The Citadel (who won at App last year), and Norfolk State and Campbell, with all 3 coming on the road. CSU has a senior QB, two solid RB's, an experienced OL, and a defense that flies to the ball and is causing a lot of turnovers.

Could CSU do the once-unthinkable, and pull this upset off????? It would be the biggest win in school history, matched only maybe by their 2005 win over Coastal to give CSU it's lone football conference championship. So it is a huge task to pull this off.

I personally think App wins by 14-17 points. But the Bucs may cause a scare up there.

It could get interesting. Anyone close to , or been involved, with the program at Charleston Southern will say that CSU always seems to play better on the road...especially in big environments. CSU's home stadium sucks, and their crowds are usually small. When they take the road against big FCS teams, the big crowd seems to energize the CSU players since that is the only time they get it.

They seem to be on a roll with this new coach. I don't think they are man-to-man as talented as App. But, they have a knack for causing turnovers, which were big in their wins over the Citadel and Norfolk. If App overlooks them, and CSU causes some turnovers, protects the ball, gets a few big plays from their senior QB....this one could be a close one!

Do you, or an ASU fan, know if ASU's all pro WR is back or is he still wearing the DUNCE cap in the corner pounding erasers and emptying trash cans?

The Elon win gave some indication that the ship is getting righted in Boone, but every game will be difficult for the remainder of the schedule. I'm feeling a bit better with Cox breaking out as a true freshman RB and being a running/receiving threat that we've lacked for a couple of years. Having Price back in the lineup (for now anyway) along with McIlfresh and Washington give us deep ball ability, and the QB by committee seems to be working out okay. :twocents:

Mine would too man! I love CSU with all my heart, put 5 years of blood, sweat and tears as a player in there. But I am realistic, and while be so proud of my old team, I know where we stand in the FCS world. It would be a huge upset. And really....looking at the schedule...I think every game after that is winnable for use up until we face Coastal late in the year. Could you imagine that, both teams undefeated hahaha? Not likely, but let me daydream while I can!!!

On a bigger scale, an upset here would make even bigger news for the Big South, and that's good for all teams in it. A 2-team playoff bid would almost start being possible should it happen, as it would make the BSC 5-1 vs the SoCon.

Parking is always a bit of an issue since most of the lots are reserved. There is a Hardee's that has some parking pretty close by (maybe .5 miles from the stadium) that I think is about $10.

As far as hotels go in Boone, I've stayed at Country Inn and Suites, Super 8, Sleep Inn, Holiday Inn Express, and Meadowood Inn in Blowing Rock. All of them are nice, but I'd go ahead and starting get something booked. There's a new Courtyard on Hwy 105 that's only a couple of miles from the stadium.

If all the Hillbillys are out on bail, it will be tough for CSU this week.

My wife and I are going to the game also. We're staying at a B&B in the area. Tried to get a room at one of the area hotels and everything was sold out. We're sitting in the visitors ticket section.

Never been to a game at App State. I've wanted to go for a VERY long time. I always said I wouldn't go until it was the CSU Buccaneers playing there. I have tons of respect for the App State program and tradition. I love what they've created up there and I can't wait to see it.

In the 90s, when I was choosing where to go to school it was either Charleston Southern or App State.

As for the game, I'm not making a prediction and I'm not going to divulge too much information on what I've seen this year from this CSU team. I will say it is not the same football team or program that many people have seen in the last 4 or 5 years. I would rather let the CSU team go up there and surprise people. I like the underdog role and the role of everybody counting them out. I really hope App State is banking on an easy victory and underestimates this CSU team.

I'm looking forward to a great game and a great atmosphere. Go CSU BUCCANEERS!

Well....you guys beat them at App last year, by a good margin. And CSU just beat you guys at your house. So.......may be closer than you think. Or are you still sore from that home loss that cost the cadets a night of leave

Sorry man, some Citadel folks have really been sore losers about the CSU game. Had to rub it in a bit!!!

I predict App St 31, CSU 21.

If your team is looking at this game as a "we beat The Citadel this year, they beat App last year, ergo we have a snowball's chance in Boone" kind of thing, then they're in big trouble. The team CSU beat in the season opener is in no way even remotely like the one that beat ASU last year.

The best thing that has come out of the CSU and Wofford losses is that our staff has realized that one offensive scheme works a lot better than 5. See you guys next time.

Haven't had the opportunity to watch App or CSU this year. Gardner-Webb is in a similar situation as CSU as we are watching a complete transformation of our football program happen in a very short period of time. No one would have bet GWU would be 3-1 against Furman, Marshall, Richmond, and Wofford. Yet, here we are. Coach Chadwell [CSU] and Coach McCray[GWU] coached together at N. Greenville so they must have learned something from each other.

I know this, if GWU were heading to App. State this weekend, there would be no doubt in the players' minds that they were going there to win a football game. I suspect CSU's players feel the same way. Good luck to them this weekend.

Go Runnin' Bulldogs!

I agree with you. However, App State, on a bad day, is still more powerful than The Citadel. I think we'll see CSU lost on Saturday, but it will be a good fight to the finish.

Gotcha. Best of luck to your son! I'm sure he's reveling in the turn around taking place in Boiling Springs.
