Charleston Southern RB Christian Reyes Brings His Faith, Family, and Football Skills to CSU
Charleston Southern struck it rich when the football coaches stumbled on to a player that could end up rewriting the program’s record books by the time he’s done. Junior running back Christian Reyes, who grew up in the small town of Rogue River, Ore., signed with CSU last December. Reyes played for the College of Siskiyous (Weed, Calif.) last season. He rushed for 1,958 yards on 317 carries and drew interest from several four-year colleges that were closer to home. However, he chose Charleston Southern because of the school’s emphasis on faith-based education.
“I had options closer to home, but visiting out here and knowing what this school stood for, I knew this would be the place for me and my family to grow in our faith,” said Reyes, a 5-10, 218-pounder.
“He runs hard inside and he just has a knack of finding a hole and getting positive yards,” said the coach. “He has been a blessing to this program,” (CSU Head Coach, Jamey) Chadwell said. “He is a tremendous young man and is mature beyond his years. He’s all the way across the country with a wife and a child, but he is making it work. How many guys his age could do that? He’s a very good student and a focused young man. He does all of these things and he never misses anything we ask him to do. I think that’s why we all respect him so much, because we all know what he goes through just to get on the field and play the game he loves to play. And, on top of that, he’s a good football player.”

That was in the P&C this morning. It's a bit of a fluff piece, IMO. The guy can perform on the field but who cares that's he's 21 yrs old with a wife and kid?

But, with CSUs recent success, it looks like more and more press is coming there way. They've been getting more attention than The Citadel.

Its about time CSU gets some attention in Charleston. Football is on the rise. Basketball is championship (March Madness) level, and baseball is building and moving in the right direction. Great things are happening there throughout the campus (Athletically and academically, new buildings being built).

As for the story, it is significant on several fronts. Yes, this guy can carry the rock and he is a solid rusher. He runs with intensity and is smart about picking his holes. However, the story also included the faith and family angle because of the type of school Charleston Southern is. It is a faith-based school like Liberty and others. This story shows that. It is not just fluff. There is something significant about who this guy is off the field and that he is symbolic of what CSU is all about. The other significant thing about the story is that he exemplifies the good things about college athletics. This is the same reason why many people like the FCS / I-AA level of football because it hasn't gotten too big and too corrupt like the FBS level.

As you said, bottom line is, good press for Charleston Southern and the football program.

I was kidding BUCDAD. I'm well aware that CSU is a religious school.
