I know this is a little early, but with EWU on bye this week and Sam playing Incarnate Word i think we are ok to get the ball rolling.

Two question we had going into this season were how do we replace the Taylor twins at LB and S.

So far so good.
#35Tanner Brock (transfer TCU) after sitting out almost 2 years seems to be doing just fine and was named the SLC DPOTW.Along with #51Eric Fieilo this is shaping up to be the best LB corp the Bearkats have ever had.

#7 S Johntel Franklin (transfer from TAMU) led the bearkats with 12 tackles vs his old team.

We'll see. But right now all that stuff's pretty meaningless. Brock got named player of the week after playing against Texas Southern. The SWAC is awful. I mean REALLY awful. Consider this: Texas Southern's only previous game was a 37-13 loss to Prairie View. Prairie View gave up 62 points in losing to Southern this past weekend. That was overtime, but 49 were given up in regulation. Let's recall that Northwestern State beat Southern by 55-14.

And Franklin got 12 tackels playing safety in a game where the opponent got over 700 yards of total offense. If a safety is your leading tackler that normally means your defense is getting killed.

And of course Sam Houston State's defense WAS getting killed during that game. But one can't tell much from that because Alabama's defense also got killed even though Texas A&M lost the game.

It might turn out fine. But a person really can't tell where Sam Houston State is based on what's happened so far. Nor will they be able to tell after they beat up on Incarnate Word. All of Sam Houston State's opponents until Eastern Washington are either SO bad or SO good that you can't really tell anything about anything from the results.

I think it's difficult to gauge where either team is at right now. This will be EWU's first actual FCS opponent (2 x FBS, 1 x DII up to this point).

I think you can say our Off line is OK. witness our rushing stat line vs TAMU.

wait for it. go john, bash TAMUs def. They are much worse than EWU or anyone in the SLC. So, yeah cant glean anything from that game. :tothehand:

and I said so far so good, not that we were better than NDSU. sheesh.

why dont you go back to making excuses for your school almost getting beat by a DII squad. sad.

I have to agree with John that no one really knows how good or bad the Kats are yet. EWU will be the measuring stick.

I am hoping for a hot and humid game day.

The Eagles layoff is either going to help them or hurt them.

EWU will be SHSU's first actual FCS opponent as well. ;)

For the record, this is the unofficial thread. Everyone keep an eye out for SE's official game week thread full of game info and articles next week. :coffee:

I think it's a lot easier to gauge Eastern Washington since they did actually beat Oregon State and play very competitively with Toledo. I think it's safe to say they look pretty good.

It's a lot harder with Sam Houston State. They got blown out by the one good team they played...but it's fair to say that probably any FCS team would be blown out by Texas A&M. But you just don't know.

Can I ask, I know OSU is I-A, but why is the OSU win such a huge deal? Why hang your hat on that one when preseason polls are idiotic.

Do I in particular really need to bash them? I mean, right now they're ranked 112th in FBS total defense. They are awful. Does that mean they're worse than EWU? Heck I don't know. But they're bad.

The Texas humidity plus Eastern's questionable run defense make Sam Houston the favorite, IMO. EWU could always chuck it up like last year to force a shootout, but keep in mind the Bearkats have a different defensive coordinator this year.

I think I will take the BSC in this game and the Southland in the other game. The Bobcats were amazingly unimpressive last week.

Yeah, but losing to Weber is the ultimate in un-impressiveness. Cats win.

Texas A&M was also still dealing with suspensions when they played Sam ... it's still impressive to put up good numbers and 28 points on an SEC team, but there are quite a few FCS schools who probably could have done the same.
