Big Sky

EWU 21-33 TOL
humb 6-43 PSU
CP 17-34 CSU
NAU 21-10 UCD
sou 56-63 SAC (OT)
westst 3-29 IDST
WEB 6-70 USU
SUU 10-48 WSU
mesa 0-26 MTST
NOCO 7-35 WYO
UMT 55-17 UND

  • NConf Record: 4-5
    Overall: 16-16

    vs. FCS: 0-0
    Overall: 4-2

Best Performance: (#11) Montana 55, North Dakota 17 - Jordan Johnson puts up a Big-Sky-record efficiency rating of 322.3 against a NoDak defense that couldn't even stop his offense from scoring a touchdown until garbage time.

Worst Performance: Sacramento St. 63, (NAIA) Southern Oregon 56 (OT) - The offense did make up for not scoring in the first two games, but I still don't think this was quite what the Hornets had in mind for this game.

Most Surprising Result: Sacramento St. 63, (NAIA) Southern Oregon 56 (OT) - The definition of ambivalence: when your starting QB and best both WR set school records for touchdowns, but your team barely wins an NAIA game.

Southland

mcmur 13-50 SFA
TXSO 17-55 SHSU
LAM 3-59 OKST
UCA 23-24 UTM
SELU 26-34 SDKST
NWST 9-66 CIN
uaw 42-44 MCNSE
NICH 7-70 ULL

  • NConf Record: 3-5
    Overall: 12-12

    vs. FCS: 1-2
    Overall: 6-3

Best Performance: Southeastern Louisiana 26, (#6) South Dakota St. 34 - The Lions dominated SDSU in a lot of stats, but a 6-1 turnover disadvantage and a 12-4 penalty disadvantage will doom any team.

Worst Performance: Nicholls St. 7, (FBS) Louisiana-Lafayette 70 - Reality returns to Natchitoches as the Colonels, a week after beating a weak FBS, get wasted by another.

Most Surprising Result: (#13) McNeese St. 44, (DII) West Alabama 42 - I know the Southland has had more than its fair share of inexplicable struggles with DII teams over the years, but it's still pretty surprising for a top-15 team to allow a DII quarterback to put up a 231 efficiency rating.

Missouri Valley

SELU 26-34 SDKST
MIZST 38-41 MUR
ILST 24-57 EIU
WIU 12-29 MINN
ucwv 10-31 SIU

YSU 17-55 MSU

  • NConf Record: 3-4
    Overall: 14-12

    vs. FCS: 1-2
    Overall: 8-4

Best Performance: (#6) South Dakota St. 34, Southeastern Louisiana 26 - Zach Zenner does what he does, putting up 188 total yards and 3 touchdowns in an unexpectedly tough win.

Worst Performance: (#18) Illinois St. 24, (#9) Eastern Illinois St. 57 - I suspected ISU's ranking was hollow, but I didn't think it was so hollow that they would allow 739 yards to Garoppolo & co.

Most Surprising Result: (#6) South Dakota St. 34, Southeastern Louisiana 26 - The Jackrabbits being 3-0 isn't surprising, but it is of some concern that they're allowing 412 ypg on defense.

OVC

ILST 24-57 EIU
una 21-24 JAXST (2OT)
CCU 51-32 EKU
MIZST 38-41 MUR
TSU 26-16 JSU (in Memphis, TN)
TTU 30-27 HAMP
UCA 23-24 UTM
AP 10-42 UTC

  • NConf Record: 6-2
    Overall: 15-11

    vs. FCS: 5-2
    Overall: 11-4

Best Performance: Tennessee-Martin 24, (#8) Central Arkansas 23 - Skyhawks block a field goal as time expires to move to 2-0 versus ranked FCS opponents.

Worst Performance: Austin Peay 10, Tennessee-Chattannoga 42 - The Governors have only defeated one DI non-conference opponent since 1998 (Indiana State in 2007).

Most Surprising Result: Jacksonville St. 24, (DII) North Alabama 21 (2OT) - I guess the lesson for FCS teams is not to play a directional Alabama unless it's an FBS one. :?

Pioneer League

wjc 36-34 VALPO
BUT 31-28 frank
DAY 21-14 RMU
MARIST 43-23 GTOWN
lenrhy 34-18 DVDSN
CHSO 30-10 CAMP

MHEAD 19-69 JU

  • NConf Record: 4-3
    Overall: 10-19

    vs. FCS: 2-1
    Overall: 3-13

Best Performance: Marist 43, Georgetown 23 - Red Fox QB Chuckie Looney accounts for 5 total touchdowns while his defense forces 3 turnovers & gets 7 sacks.

Worst Performance: Valparaiso 34, (DII) William Jewell 36 - Sigh… Only Valpo could lose to a lousy DII at home & not surprise anyone. :ohno:

Most Surprising Result: Marist 43, Georgetown 23 - Marist becomes the just the second Pioneer League team to get a non-conference FCS win this season. :?

Tomorrow: the rest of the playoff conferences.

Once again, I wish I could smack you for this, Venus, but you're actually being NICE here. We deserve worse than what you provide. Outside of maybe Valpo, we turned in what has to be considered the worst performance out there, particularly for a team that actually won a game....

I don't know why everyone is so surprised by the SDSU vs SLU matchup. SLU is a great football team, with a very athletic, mobile QB. Also, UND during the 4th quarter, basically was Hail Mary City with some great receivers. Our Defense has forced 12 turnovers, we are very good in the trenches, we have an outstanding RB, and our QB doesn't make dumb decisions.

Dayton has 2 FCS wins, Jacksonville has 1 and Marist has 1.

I guess I should have specified non-conference FCS wins.

MARIST 43-23 GTOWN

  • NConf Record: 3-3
    Overall: 8-9

    vs. FCS: 2-3
    Overall: 7-8

Best Performance: Fordham 30, (FBS) Temple 29 - Rams get their first-ever FBS win thanks to a 29-yard TD pass from Michael Nebrich to Sam Ajala with 4 seconds left.

Worst Performance: Georgetown 23, Marist 43 - The Hoya turnaround is looking more & more like a fleeting thing.

Most Surprising Result: Holy Cross 52, Central Connecticut St. 21 - The Crusaders, who only had 111 total rushing yards coming in, pile up 419 yards on the ground against the defenseless Blue Devils.

NEC

SFPA 20-24 JMU
DAY 21-14 RMU
WAG 0-54 SYR
BRY 22-35 MAINE
HC 52-21 CCSU
lincpa 3-45 SACHRT

  • NConf Record: 1-5
    Overall: 8-11

    vs. FCS: 0-4
    Overall: 6-8

Best Performance: St. Francis (PA) 20, (#20) James Madison 24 - The Red Flash take advantage of 4 JMU turnovers in nearly pulling off a huge upset.

Worst Performance: Central Connecticut St. 21, Holy Cross 52 - The Blue Devils won back-to-back NEC titles in '09 & '10, but have gone just 6-18 since.

Most Surprising Result: St. Francis (PA) 20, (#20) James Madison 24 - SFPA did finally show a bit of progress last year under former NFL O-Lineman Chris Villarrial, but to play a ranked team close a week after being whipped by another is still quite surprising.

CAA

URI 19-13 ALB (OT)
SBU 23-26 BUFF (5OT)
COLG 23-53 UNH
BRY 22-35 MAINE
UD 7-51 NAVY

SFPA 20-24 JMU

  • NConf Record: 5-3
    Overall: 15-11

    vs. FCS: 5-1
    Overall: 13-4

Best Performance: (#17) Stony Brook 23, (FBS) Buffalo 26 (5OT) - The Seawolves nearly pull off an FBS win despite not scoring a point until the fourth quarter.

Worst Performance: Albany 13, Rhode Island 19 (OT) - Ending your opponent's 15-game losing streak is not the best way to christen your new field.

Most Surprising Result: (#15) Richmond 10, Gardner-Webb 12 - Spiders manage a whopping 10 rushing yards against a supposedly overmatched opponent.

Big South

ngu 37-24 VMI
MORG 10-38 LIB
RICH 10-12 GWEBB
CCU 51-32 EKU
CHSO 30-10 CAMP
PRESBY 20-21 FUR

  • NConf Record: 4-2
    Overall: 12-6

    vs. FCS: 4-1
    Overall: 9-2

Best Performance: Gardner-Webb 12, (#15) Richmond 10 - Jordan Day goes 4/4 on field goals to provide the Bulldogs an out-of-nowhere upset.

Worst Performance: VMI 24, (DII) North Greenville 37 - Keydets are outrushed 215-22 in suffering their first non-DI loss since the creation of I-AA.

Most Surprising Result: Gardner-Webb 12, (#15) Richmond 10 - Not very often you upset a top-25 team without scoring a touchdown.

MEAC

DSU 7-49 TOW
MORG 10-38 LIB
HOW 19-76 ODU
TTU 30-27 HAMP
NCCEN 40-13 CHAR
ELON 10-23 NCAT
AAMU 0-32 SCSU
fvsu 20-27 SAV
SAM 27-20 FAMU
BCU 34-13 FIU

  • NConf Record: 5-5
    Overall: 11-19

    vs. FCS: 3-4
    Overall: 5-11

Best Performance: (#23) Bethune-Cookman 34, (FBS) Florida International 13 - The Wildcats get their first-ever FBS win as they dominate the Golden Panthers on the ground, 311 yards to 73.

Worst Performance: Howard 19, (FBS) Old Dominion 76 - Gaining 465 yards is good… unless you give up 733.

Most Surprising Result: (#23) Bethune-Cookman 34, (FBS) Florida International 13 - What's more surprising: that a MEAC team beat an FBS, or the that the MEAC team was actually favored?

SoCon

CIT 28-21 WCU
ELON 10-23 NCAT
PRESBY 20-21 FUR
GASO 20-30 WOFF
SAM 27-20 FAMU
AP 10-42 UTC

  • NConf Record*: 4-1
    Overall: 7-10

    vs. FCS*: 3-1
    Overall: 3-5

Best Performance: (#16) Wofford 30, (FBS) Georgia Southern 20 - In a battle between two very similar teams, it's not surprising a 3-1 turnover advantage would decide it.

Worst Performance: Western Carolina 21, The Citadel 28 - They almost overcame a 21-point deficit, but the Catamounts still lose their 23rd. consecutive SoCon game.

Most Surprising Result: (#16) Wofford 30, (FBS) Georgia Southern 20 - The Terriers obtain a big boon by getting a (technically) conference win perhaps no other SoCon team figures to get.

* - I know App State & Georgia Southern are still technically in the SoCon this year, but I'm counting them as FBS and as a non-conference opponent for SoCon teams (same idea as Georgia State last season & UMass the year before).

Tomorrow: SWAC & Indies.

Ivy League

(no games)

SWAC

TXSO 17-55 SHSU
ALST 40-39 UAPB
lincmo 47-34 GRAM (in Kansas City, MO)
PVAMU 59-62 SU (2OT)
AAMU 0-32 SCSU
TSU 26-16 JSU (in Memphis, TN)
MVSU 28-35 ALCORN

  • NConf Record: 0-4
    Overall: 1-16

    vs. FCS: 0-3
    Overall: 0-7

Best Performance: Alabama St. 40, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 39 - Daniel Duhart completes 86% of his passes while the Hornet running game racks up 275 yards in knocking off the defending SWAC champs.

Worst Performance: Grambling 34, (DII) Lincoln (MO) 47 - Maybe firing your coach two weeks into the season isn't the best idea… :?

Most Surprising Result: Grambling 34, (DII) Lincoln (MO) 47 - Who would've ever thought the Tigers could go through a stretch where they'd lose 13 of 14 including an embarrassing DII defeat?

Independents

nmhu 28-52 ACU
lang 0-24 UIW
LEH 28-25 MONM
NCCEN 40-13 CHAR

  • Non-Ind. Record*: 2-2
    Overall: 7-5

    vs. FCS*: 0-2
    Overall: 1-5

Best Performance: Abilene Christian 52, (DII) New Mexico Highlands 28 - Obviously it isn't the same level of competition, but John David Baker has some Jordan-Johnson-like numbers with 14 TDs, 0 INTS, and a 231.6 efficiency rating.

Worst Performance: Charlotte 13, NC Central 40 - The 49ers commit 7 turnovers in their first scholarship DI test.

Most Surprising Result: Charlotte 13, NC Central 40 - Charlotte still has a long way to go to be ready for their imminent FBS move.

* - Old Dominion is a first-year transitional, so I'm counting them as FBS and not counting them as an FCS Independent.

Grambling shouldn't have run off Broadway. Can't say I'm too sad for them.
