2013 Big South Conference preseason poll

(First-place votes)

1. Coastal Carolina (9) 84

2. Liberty (6) 80

3. Gardner-Webb 58

4. Charleston Southern 39

5. VMI 27

5. Presbyterian 27

I really hope CSU can turn itself around. With stadium upgrades, they could attract better players. But you will likely never get high caliber students to play at a religious or military college that have poor facilities.

I could see the #1 spot going either way. With Stony Brook gone, it's a two-team race; no other need apply.

Unfortunately, ALSO without Stony Brook, the Big South is back to an almost GUARANTEED one-bid conference, even with the expando-playoffs. Second place is done REGARDLESS of record. That's despite the fact that Liberty is playing two FBS schools (yes, one is in transition right now). One of Liberty's FBS opponents (Kent State) should be as close to an auto-win as FBS opponents go (that is, they're not B(C)$ or anywhere close to it, though they DID have an outstanding record last year). The other is transitioning ODU. I have a feeling, though, that those games will be more than wiped out by the presence of D-II's Kentucky Wesleyan and Brevard College. CCU only has one FBS game (closing against FBS #8 South Carolina), but they have no D-IIs to screw up the schedule. Thus, Liberty MUST win outright. CCU probably has to as well, but an upset win at South Carolina and a tie with Liberty for the title MIGHT get CCU a second bid for the Big South, but probably not. A clean second place, and forget it.

I think Liberty has a chance at an at large even with the D2 games under the new methodology they are debuting this year. If Liberty goes 2-1 or 3-0 against the trio of Kent State, Richmond and ODU (longshot for sure), I think that a loss to CCU and finishing second in the Big South will not lead to LU getting excluded this year, even with the two D2 opponents (which is not ideal believe me the Flames fans are especially frustrated at that).

Another sign things are moving in the right direction is new uniforms and helmets. We are a Nike team now. I like seeing that Nike swoosh on the uniforms. Never understood why we had New Balance in recent years. New Balance? For football? Didn't seem right to me. Anyway, the Nike swoosh on the jerseys, pants, and shoes looks sharp.

White helmets this year. I like them. They look good also.

Now, I'd like to see a new logo. Love the colors, but I think we need a new and better logo.

Everything is full steam ahead now, though. We are headed in a VERY strong and positive direction. We will reach a new level of success under Coach Jamey Chadwell.

I like being picked 4th. We will finish higher than we were picked.

Agreed. Your logo is outdated. I'll hit up a few games this year.

Honestly, if you make the stadium look better than the stadiums these kids played in during high school, you can recruit better. Face it, teenagers perceive success by what they can feel and touch. Unfortunately, not many high caliber ball players want to play for a military or religious school.

Liberty ain't getting in without the autobid.

OOC I see

Kent State-L
Morgan State - W
Richmond- L
Kentucky Weslyan - W
Old Dominion - L
Brevard - W

2 D2 games will keep you out...even with the "D2's count".

You NEED at least 2 wins against ODU, Richmond, and Kent State for a chance at being looked at.

Big South erred by not putting LU and CCU the last weekend like they had been doing with LU and SBU. They set the schedule last winter? They had to know good chance those would be the top 2 teams. Putting those 2 last good chance would have a de facto BS championship/play in game on 11/23.

Last game is usually a rivalry game and our biggest in state rival is CSU.

I was referring to liberty's schedule and its Kentucky Wesleyan and Brevard.

Clenz I basically said that the Flames are going to have to take two of three among Kent State, Richmond and ODU to have a chance at an at large and that its a longshot

Uh yeah. I am sure your fanbase is much more enthused about a match-up with the Bucs than the Flames.

I agree with Sly...I don't think that the CCU-CSU game has had meaning for both sides since the 2005 game that CSU won to I believe end CCU's chance at three straight outright conference titles

Is English taught at Liberty?

LU/CCU is always a heated game and a good rivalry but since 2005 ill always consider CSU a rival both due to our proximity and the 2005 game.

Since you seem so focused on English, perhaps you could diagram your original sentence and then explain how my response was in appropriate. Can someone not offer an opposing viewpoint without inciting ridicule? We're all stuck in the Big South together, bro. We might as well try to put up with each other.

For the record, I suspect your view on rivalries might be in the minority in Conway. But you give valid reasons for your position.

I would suspect any class post 2005 would agree with you. My classmates and I were there before football and were there at that infamous game.

However, my original comment specifically stated rivalry week is usually held for instate rivalries, hence my LU omission. I see LU as a rival, in the sense that, LU and CCU are the top teams in the conference and in that regard, I enjoy it. But I enjoy the instate more. I invite you to a CSU/CCU game at CSU. It's packed with CCU fans and that is no exaggeration.

Oh, sorry for being a dick. There's no excuse.

Mark, while as a Liberty grad twice over, I would object to the insinuation that the school doesn't teach people how to write, I have NO objection to your preference of a geographic rivalry to a league rivalry for a "rivalry week" game. As bad as league rivalries can get, they are NEVER quite so good as a geographic rivalry. That's why the Causeway Classic is so important to Sac and Davis fans and the Brawl of the Wild is such for Griz and 'Cat fans. Sac-Weber is turning into a pretty good rivalry, as is UM-EWU, but for the fans, they'll never be as good as the natural rivals who are very close in distance, usually within the same state.

I can't speak for fellow Liberty fans on that score, but I have no issue with your taking that stance.

there's no way the BS is getting an at large bid with only six teams.

You could have stopped after the 11th word. We play against a stacked deck. Last year was a fluke under crazy circumstances. We could be Top 10 in the polls but if we lose a league title tiebreaker (like my Flames seem to do every season) then we stay home.
