Charleston Southern released it's 2013 schedule, which is a fairly tough one by CSU/Big South standards, despite not playing a 1-A team for the first time in many years:
- Shorter (D2)
- @Campbell (non- FB Big South)
- @Norfolk State (MEAC)
- @The Citadel (SoCon)
- North Greenville (D2)
- @ Appalachian State (SoCon)
- @ VMI (BSC)
- UNC-Charlotte (Independent)
- @ Presbyterian (BSC)
- Coastal Carolina (BSC)
- @Gardner Webb (BSC)
- Liberty (BSC Championship Game
haha I hope!!)
Good slate of games for CSU. Im kinda glad they took a year off from the 1-A/FBS teams. The two Division 2 games should be solid wins. UNC-Charlotte is a future FBS team, but maybe we'll catch them in this 1st year and have a nice feather in our hat with an on-paper win over a Big East or CUSA team in 2020 haha! Campbell is a non-football member of the Big South, and their FB team is young and growing. Should be a win.
The Citadel and App State will be two very tough SoCon games. We beat The Citadel once, and were tied with them at the half in 2012. CSU will need a near perfect game to beat them. Same for App. Probably 2 losses.
As for the conference....no more Stoney Brook. So, I suppose as usual Liberty and Coastal will be the teams to beat. We host Coastal and Liberty....but anyone who has played @ CSU knows our home field advantage isn't much of one unless it is in September in the smothering Charleston heat/humidity. BUT, in 2005, we beat both Liberty and Coastal @ home to win the Big South, so who knows. PC, VMI, Gardner Webb will all be very tough, close games that CSU could win or lose, a toss up.
Wishful thinking: CSU gets hot, upsets Citadel, beats UNC-Charlotte, loses to App, and runs the table into a 9-1 record and a showdown with Liberty for the playoff berth.
Probable thinking: CSU loses to Citadel, App, Liberty, Coastal. Toss up vs UNC Charlotte and Gardner Webb. Wins the rest to finish with a winning record at 6-5. Not too bad for CSU standards.
Disaster: CSU stumbles out of the game, loses to Shorter who they only beat by 3 last year, get blasted by App and Citadel, UNC Charlotte explodes with 1-A caliber players already on campus, Gardner Webb returns to their 2002 championship form, Liberty and Coastal are their usual juggernaut selves, and CSU limps out of the season with 2 wins over Cambpell and North Greenville.
