Here is the final numbers from Old Dominion:

The NCAA collected a $374,712 paycheck from the two Football Championship Subdivision playoff games at Old Dominion this past fall.
That check from ODU represented more than half the proceeds from the games, said Ken Brown, the school's senior associate athletic director for internal operations.
Both the second-round contest against Coastal Carolina and third-round game against Georgia Southern sold out 20,068-seat Foreman Field. They were the largest crowds in the FCS playoffs except for the championship game in Frisco, Texas, which drew 21,411.
As part of its agreement to host the games, ODU was able to keep 15 percent of the net gate.
Brown said ODU pocketed $66,125 - $35,196 for the Coastal Carolina game and $30,929 for Georgia Southern - after expenses. That money will be put in an escrow account to help fund future NCAA events held at ODU.
In all, ODU generated $676,520 in ticket revenue and had $235,680 in expenses, including everything from ushers to utilities to setting up temporary restrooms. Income was derived from ticket and parking revenue. As part of its long-term contract with ODU, Aramark paid a portion of concessions revenue back to the university's general fund, not to the athletic department.

I could be mistaken but I doubt the expenses go down much with stadium size. A few more security guards and staff would be about it. So it looks like you really need to be approaching $20K in attendance to break even. That's why our A.D. has claimed that the university really doesn't make money at these games. The NCAA needs to take a smaller cut, especially with expansion and probability of schools with smaller fanbases and stadiums hosting more playoff games.

The NCAA is a cartel.

Griz, Delaware, App and GSU fans have known this for years. Paying $26 for playoff games wondering why the schools don't have more money......the NCAA reaches in and takes it all to cover their expenses. You can hear the smiles at headquarters in the years, like, 2009 where one of these schools has home field advantage through the playoffs or they are seeded to make more money to cover the rest of the schools expenses.

The two playoff games at ODU had ticket prices of $20 each. The ticket prices for the regular season was something like $25 or $26 each. In hindsight, they could have sold out at the regular season price which would have been another $150k or more in revenue. Since the NCAA would have taken a high percentage of that additional revenue, they are the ones who get screwed the most. But under the current system, ODU is forced to assume the risk, and that risk prevented them from going that high. It's an odd system but I don't know enough about it to say what would be better.

Don’t worry, ODU won’t have this problem in the FBS…then it will be bowl committees taking your money instead of the NCAA.

And forcing you to buy 10-20 K tickets at $100/ticket

With none of the residual revenue generation benefiting the local community (hotel, dining, travel, etc from people coming into town to see the home playoff game).

We're catching flak from SWAC posters on our messageboard about these numbers.

I think it was 2009-10 when UM sent off something like 1.2 million.

I remember a thread on Egriz that stated it was over 1 million, but cannot remember the exact numbers. I am sure Brock will have the correct numbers.

I believe that the NCAA takes it's percentage cut of the total AFTER expenses (of course, the listed expenses have to be legitimate). Though it could also depend on how much is BID in order to get the home game.
I have no problem with the NCAA taking that big of a cut, as long as most of that money goes towards paying the traveling expenses for the road teams.

I believe the NCAA also states that playoff tickets can not be less than any regular season game. Montana charges $26 for OOC games (even the D-II beatdowns). We fans still get stuck paying premium prices for playoff games as conference games are starting to go for well over $30 and Homecoming and Griz/Cat are well over $50 now.

I am sure the App State and Homecoming game next year will be 60..or more.

You are going to have to prove that because like I said above, ODU charged $20 per ticket for the playoffs when the regular season tickets cost either $25 or $26.
