Why do ex football players get so fat?

I keep asking this, and I really do know the reason, but still want to hear from others why ex football players get so fat?
Mary Mornhinweg, a former Montana QB was just announced as the new Jets OC and I was stunned to see he is very much overweight.
Where did the pride go?

Sitting around watching film all day, that is if they end up coaching.

With how many Americans in general are overweight, I'm not sure this is statistically significant.
That being said, I have a theory. Football players are eating & exercising constantly to build energy/muscle. When they quit, the exercise side usually goes away but the eating side not so much. Not to mention the stress-induced eating that goes with being a football coach.

I understand what you are saying about the weight epidemic in America, but many of those who are overweight didn't get a free ride to college to play a sport.

Generally the specialists end up fat and the linemen lose weight and end up skinny.

That would be true for Marty. Former QB.
If you think I am picking on football players, I ask this question of all scholarship athletes. Hell you should see some of the former Griz VB and BB players. Yikes.

I would venture a guess that it was one of those iphone typos.

I can't speak for football players, but I can relate my military experience, which might be similar.
It's a pretty simple deal. Calories inducted versus calories expended. When I was active duty, I probably inhaled 5,000 calories a day and burned 5,000 calories a day on average, staying right at my max allowable weight of 186. When I got out, I kept inhaling 5,000 calories a day and sat on my ever expanding ass at a desk job burning probably 2,500 calories a day. I gained about ten lbs a year for five years before I said to myself that I had to do something about it. If I didn't, I'd probably weigh 300+. I'm not down where I'd like to be, but at least I've stabilized and started going back in the right direction. It's not easy. It's a constant roller coaster, because I love to eat (and drink). I just try to make each dip a little lower than the last and hopefully I'll get back to that same weight again.

Dude, you should just return half of the food you eat to the plate (by vomiting or putting down the fork) and pay yourself a refund.
In the end, it would be cheaper than your future medical bills.
Win win.

That is true about lineman Nate Newton looks practically anorexic compared to what he looked like in his playing days.

Mornhinweg learned weight at the feet of a master: Andy Reid!

Most lineman eat tremendous amounts of food to stay at playing weight. There are ver few 300lb humans that don't over-eat, in this case on purpose.
Most specialists eat average college kid diets, but feel in their own minds like they are on a diet since they see their lineman buddies eating whole pizzas, etc.
All of sudden you graduate and the lineman start eating normal portions and the specialists start eating a lot more "now that they can"?
There is certainly some exercise involved but by and large the lineman and specialists exercise and weight train very similarly in season. It's mostly diet, IMO.

Yeah I gotta stay ahead of Opie's goons.
I don't know what next season will bring, but I will definitely take in ASU-The Citadel. Not sure if the wife will give up her Xmas for me to make an additional trip.
