Columbus State looks to add football, move to DI

Columbus State University has formed a committee and hired a consultant to study the direction of the athletic program, which could include adding a football team.

The university announced the move in an email to faculty and staff this morning. A news release was put out early this afternoon.

Among the things the committee will consider is moving the athletic program to NCAA Division I. Currently the CSU teams, with the exception of the rifle team, compete in Division II.

Well, Columbus State's VB coach Casey Cornett is certainly hot! Unfortunately, they don't post their roster. That's because they're in the process of resurrecting the program after a 17-year hiatus.

Image

Recruits McKenzie Bragg (OH) and Taylor Ray (libero) are pretty, too.

Image

Mount Union's VB coach is not so bad on the eyes either, but she comes in a distant second to Columbus State's.

Image

Raider senior defensive specialist Kristen Gromes is pretty nice-looking.

Lived in Columbus for a long while, unfortunately. That place sucks but cool to see they're looking to add football.

Hey SH, I noticed SacSt drew 640 for the Montana men's Bball game last week. Is Bball that hot at SacSt? That's a serious money loser.

Thank God the Root TV deal sends us some of that Montana revenue our way. :thumb:

kem: Given our JHS-caliber gym (I wouldn't glorify it by calling it an "arena") in the MIDDLE of campus with inconvenient parking, I'm surprised we get that many. The school won't even publicize the team in the dorms. And when we had the games off campus at the Memorial Auditorium, that was a HORRIBLE atmosphere better suited for watching an opera (imagine playing hoops with chandeliers over your head) and made for a home court DISadvantage. Until we get a legitimate arena on the edge of campus near the major access road with decently accessible parking, you can expect to see attendance figures like this.

Sac has an NBA team that has a dedicated fan base, Big Sky hoops cannot and will not compete with that.

There is also that. We're like the Clippers in that regard: condemned to playing second banana forever....

Kem waits until the end of the football season to come back 'round. :)

With but one playoff win in your entire history, you have no room for smack.

NAU doesn't have the same excuse; they drew 664 for the Montana game last week.

You thought Columbus sucked? I loved it the 3 times I've been there. But I guess if you aren't an OSU fan, it would be a little different.

Kem's not interested in facts. Everyone is out of session for winter break, but I guess they all should of headed back to campus for the all important visit by um.

He should be happy the BSC didn't hit um with any home BSC games during winter break, nope it's better to rag on everyone else instead.

Not to mention that his intended smack was a complete non-sequitur to the thread.

Yep, and it was against the mighty Griz from Montana and I was there to witness it. Unfortunately it is a what have you done for me lately world and this year my Mustangs were Big Sky Co-Champions. How did your Griz do?

Just so we recognize what's REALLY going on here...

kem is just a foolish Griz fan, feeling bound to run unwarranted smack. He's a step or two up from JBB/Lakes. The vast majority of Griz fans here (like AZ) are knowledgeable fans who don't run their mouths when their team can't back it up. I've seen one or two 'Stang fans show similar tendencies (though decidedly NOT SloStang).

The difference between kem and Lakes, though, is this: kem is merely annoying, and that's where it ends. Lakes was a complete board nuiscance who was truly worthy of being banned. kem is more in the way of "stirring the pot" for good radio.

Ah that makes sense then. When I was at Fort Benning, that place BLEW so I imagine Columbus would suck.

Haven't bantered in a while, Kemajic. I'm feeling all nostalgic.

Montana and Montana State are the only schools in this conference with absolutely no local competition for sports interest/support/money. MSU and UM compete with nothing bigger collegiate sports wise in Montana and have a one state buffer on each side (Idaho, Wyoming and North Dakota) away from BCS collegiate or pro sports. U of M and MSU's situation are unlike the rest of the teams in the Big Sky. North Dakota competes with all the MN pro sports and U of Minnesota. Sacramento State probably has more to compete with attention wise than any other Big Sky schools. Portland State competes with the Pac 12 schools and local/Northwest pro teams and the list goes on and on for every other team in the Big Sky outside of the Treasure State. I've walked around Cedar City three times and noticed that the bulk of shirts I saw were Utah, BYU or Utah Jazz...not SUU Thunderbirds gear. Dbackjon said NAU's playing third banana but I'd go as far as to say they're lower than that on the totem pole. NAU competes vs. the Suns, Dbacks and Cardinals for attention and money as well as ASU and UofA.

I will give your Griz football program support its due, Kemajic. They are there thick or thin. But if the Griz faithful are such great hoops fans then why the deuce isn't Dahlberg selling out every home basketball game?

Enlighten the rest of us Big Sky conference peons....please.
