Can someone PLEASE explain to me...

...what is going on in the brain of the schedule-makers at Nicholls State? I mean, I sorta get the Pioneer: as a non-schollie/limited schollie conference, there's no chance in Hades they're getting a playoff bid, so if they play during the first two weeks of the playoffs, nobody gives a rip. But Nicholls is in the Southland, one of the major playoff-going conferences. They're playing Oregon State today?!? What the cr@p?!?

Did they just ASSUME that they weren't going to the playoffs before the season started? If they'd had a surprise season, would they have told the Beavers to stuff it and take a playoff bid? Could they have even gotten a nod (short of winning the SLC AQ) a game short?

I think I'd rather take my chances with a D-II on the schedule in a "normal" position (start of the year or maybe even as homecoming) that intentionally kill a season scheduling an FBS DURING THE PLAYOFFS....

Game would have been scrapped if Oregon State was in Pac-12 championship or if Nicholls somehow got a playoff bid.

The Marist/San Diego Pioneer game that you were referencing was also a make-up...that one from Hurricane Sandy.

I wasn't necessarily referencing that, although it COULD fit. The Pioneer (San Diego in particular) has a history of crazy scheduling like that. I remember one year in which there was speculation that an undefeated San Diego would get in, but they had a playoff-week game at the Manure Pile. Were they going to dump the game or not? As it turned out, they got snubbed AND lost the UCD game.
