  • NConf Record: 0-0
    Overall: 17-16

    vs. FCS: 0-0
    Overall: 5-3

Best Performance: Southern Utah 30, (#1) Eastern Washington 27 - The T-Birds beat Eastern for the first time since 1998 thanks to 392 yards passing by Brad Sorensen and 100-yard receiving efforts from Fatu Moala & C.J. Morgan.

Worst Performance: Idaho St. 24, Montana 70 - Idaho State has to be in contention for having the worst defense of all time: last in the nation in run defense (339 ypg); 6th. worst in passing efficiency defense (158.0); last in scoring defense (54 ppg); and last in total defense (561 ypg). This was also the second time this season the Bengals have given up 70+ points to a conference opponent with a losing record.

Most Surprising Result: (#1) Eastern Washington 27, Southern Utah 30 - After the way they'd won some of their games this season, you had to figure the Eagles were living on borrowed time.

    vs. FCS: 0-0
    Overall: 5-3

Worst Performance: Nicholls St. 26, Northwestern St. 27 - An early botched extra point costs the Colonels dearly as they lose their 16th. straight DI game.

Most Surprising Result: Stephen F. Austin 24, McNeese St. 35 - Odd fact about this game: the Lumberjacks ran 100(!) offensive plays to McNeese's 70, yet lost possession time by nearly 6 minutes.

Worst Performance: Austin Peay 27, Southeast Missouri St. 48 - Jake Ryan has a solid day passing the ball for the Governors, but not nearly good enough to overcome a run defense that allowed 399 yards.

Most Surprising Result: Eastern Illinois 24, (#18) Eastern Kentucky 7 - EIU ends a 5-game losing streak to EKU to further confuse the OVC race.

NEC

MONM 28-27 DUQ
RMU 13-23 WAG
SFPA 30-32 CCSU
ALB 23-20 SACHRT

  • NConf Record: 0-0
    Overall: 8-17

    vs. FCS: 0-0
    Overall: 8-16

Best Performance: Monmouth 28, Duquesne 27 - Julian Hayes runs for 158 yards and 2 touchdowns in leading the Hawks to a surprising road win.

Worst Performance: St. Francis (PA) 30, Central Connecticut St. 32 - Two 100-yard rushers aren't enough for the Red Flash to overcome CCSU's single 200-yard rusher.

Most Surprising Result: Duquesne 27, Monmouth 28 - The Dukes, seen as Albany's chief threat coming into the season, fall 2 games behind the Danes before even playing them.

CAA

TOW 49-35 NOVA
UNH 40-20 URI
MAINE 24-10 W&M
GSU 21-28 JMU
UD 26-31 ODU

  • NConf Record*: 1-0
    Overall: 22-14

    vs. FCS*: 0-0
    Overall: 16-4

Best Performance: (#23) Towson 49, (#19) Villanova 35 - The Tigers right their ship by racking up 590 yards and outsacking Villanova 7-0.

Worst Performance: (#9) James Madison 28, (FBS) Georgia St. 21 - It looks weird that an "FBS" win would be "Worst," but Georgia State has played awful against everyone aside from Rhode Island.

Most Surprising Result: (#9) James Madison 28, (FBS) Georgia St. 21 - The Dukes get 11 tackles-for-loss to GSU's 4, yet still lose the yardage battle.

Big South

VMI 7-38 GWEBB
LIB 12-36 CCU
EDWAT 7-42 CHSO
SBU 56-17 PRESBY

  • NConf Record: 1-0
    Overall: 13-21

    vs. FCS: 0-0
    Overall: 5-13

Best Performance: Coastal Carolina 36, Liberty 12 - Chanticleers win rushing 226-86 and turnovers 3-0 in a surprisingly dominant win.

Worst Performance: VMI 7, Gardner-Webb 38 - In a battle to avoid the basement, the Keydets are outscored 28-0 in the third quarter.

Most Surprising Result: Coastal Carolina 36, Liberty 12 - CCU moves to 4-1 all-time versus Liberty in Conway.

MEAC

DSU 28-23 MORG
SAV 13-21 HAMP
NFOLK 9-30 NCAT
HOW 23-41 SCSU
NCCEN 17-42 BCOOK

  • NConf Record: 0-0
    Overall: 11-20

    vs. FCS: 0-0
    Overall: 4-8

Best Performance: Bethune-Cookman 42, NC Central 17 - The Wildcats take command of the MEAC by outgaining the previously unbeaten (in conference) Eagles 443-234.

Worst Performance: Norfolk St. 9, North Carolina A&T 30 - The Spartans allowed the Aggies to score on a 100-yard missed field goal return. I don't think too many teams win after doing that.

Most Surprising Result: NC Central 17, Bethune-Cookman 42 - I think we all suspected the Eagles were pretenders, but I'm not sure we expected them to scream it at the top of their lungs.

SoCon

APP 38-27 WCU
FUR 31-17 ELON
CIT 21-24 WOFF
GASO 39-31 UTC (3OT)

  • NConf Record: 0-0
    Overall: 13-8

    vs. FCS: 0-0
    Overall: 8-2

Best Performance: (#7) Wofford 24, The Citadel 21 - A missed field goal by The Citadel & a made field goal by the Terriers appears to be the only significant statistical difference in this game.

Worst Performance: Elon 17, Furman 31 - Just like Villanova, the Phoenix lose the sack war 7-0.

Most Surprising Result: Furman 31, Elon 17 - It's safe to say the Paladins are still stuck in mediocrity, but at least they managed to end a 4-game losing streak to Elon.

* - I know Georgia State is still technically in the CAA this year, but I'm counting them as FBS and as a non-conference opponent for CAA teams (same as UMass last season).

Tomorrow: what's left of the non-playoff conferences.

I agree JMU had a bad performance. W&M would also have to be up there- 4 of their 5 losses had been close: 7-6 @ Maryland, 17-14 vs Lafayette, 20-17 @ Towson, and 27-26 2OT @ JMU. They were then 2-5/1-3 at home versus then 2-5/1-3 Maine and lose by 2 TDs in a game almost everyone predicted W&M would win.

Yeah, yardage wise the JMU game vs GST was close, but JMU was up 28-7 early in the 4th qtr, despite JMU's normally reliable kicker missing 3 FG from 41, 46, and 49 yds. JMU was up significantly yardage wise at that point- GST only had 184 yds through the 1st 3+ qtrs. Then GST scored TDs on back to back possessions and had one more possession. Those 3 possessions they totaled 164 yds to actually outgain JMU 348-340. 54 yds of that was a run off of a faked punt to set up their last TD.

You have to give GST credit for not quitting, and criticism to JMU for having a letdown when got up 28-7, especially the defense which was stout for 3 qtrs before folding like a tent in the 4th.

Most Surprising Result: Dayton 9, San Diego 41 - The Flyers suffer their worst conference loss since a 56-14 beatdown in San Diego at the end of 2006.
