Southern University fired third-year football coach Stump Mitchell on Friday, less than 24 hours after a disastrous home opener left the Jaguars at 0-2 to begin the season.
Mitchell, who came to Southern after serving as the running backs coach for the Washington Redskins, was in the third and final guaranteed year of a contract paying him $200,000 annually.
Mitchell was 6-18 in his third season at Southern. He is 14-42 overall as a head coach after going 8-24 in three previous seasons at Morgan State.

Stump Mitchell coached high school football in Casa Grande, AZ when my sister was a student. He was one of the few coaches able to get results with their football program over the years. My sister said the players she knew seemed to like playing for him. Sorry to see he's on the outs at Southern.

He was a well respected asst. coach in the NFL. That's probably where he will go now. I don't see him ever getting another HC shot.

After that 6-0 abortion of a loss to MVSU it was the only move to make. TJ is doing cartwheels right now. it also gives Southern all year to find a replacement, or at least target potential replacements. Since its his last year in the contract it means Southern won't be out any money.

Well, he could always claim he inherited this mess from his predecessor and that nobody could have fixed it in 3 years.
He won't do that though, because he's a man of integrity and will own his shortcomings.

As stated before too bad Ted White is gone would be perfect replacement and he is a Louisiana native. He could make sense of their anemic passing attack by getting rid of Joseph as the starting QB.

As a man, I have nothing but respect for Stump. The deck was stacked against him from the moment he was hired. He didn't have much to work with. The lack of consistecy on the field doomed him. I think it would have taken 8 wins to get that 4th year option. New AD = new direction.

Also I think it wouldn't fly because the guy before him, Pete Richardson, had only two losing seasons in 17 years at Southern and was 6-5 during his final year. I think that, ironically, he set the expectations bar so high by how well he did during 1993 - 2003 that seasons like 6-5 and 8-3 became unacceptable. I was listening to the Jaguar Journal radio show Saturday and they had some school official on talking about how much of a hit the school has taken over recent years financially due to State budget cuts.
But anyway, you had a guy before Mitchell who had two losing seasons in 17 years at 5-6 and 4-5 (hurricane shortened season) then Mitchell comes in and they go 2-9 and 4-7. Consistent with my belief that Richardson wasn't the problem.

And more importantly they took care of business vs Grambling!!!!!

Pete's problem wasn't his win/loss record, it was the lack of control of the players (recruiting too many props, kids not respecting the coaches, poor attitudes) toward the end of his tenure. So he gets some of the blame for having the program in poor position when he left (APR issues). Fan expectations grew to almost impossible levels and a couple factors he couldn't control (rise in ticket prices, bad schedules), but ultimately he had to carry the bulk of the blame. It's honestly a miracle that Southern won two games in 2010 with the shape the team was in when Stump took over.

I honestly think Southern would have won more than 2 games if Richardson had been there in 2010. But your mention of the APR brings something up: I do think the APR thing really hurt Southern.
I'm not saying that as a shot at Southern. In fact, I don't like the APR thing because it has the effect of demanding that athletes do better as a group than the general student population does. But from just listening to the Jaguar Journal show over the years I do think it really hurt Southern.

We played 22 freshmen that year, maybe he would steal a couple games, but with the schollie and practice reductions it would have been hard for anyone to win. Also want to point out less than half of Pete's last 3 recruiting classes qualified.

No way Bayou Classic brings in too much money for both SU&GSU.
