Well, I know there have been some earlier threads on this this yr, it hadn't been officially approved by the NCAA Division I Championships/Sport Management Cabinet. Well, it now has been. Just released by the AP 5 hrs ago:

"FCS playoff expansion to 24 teams gets OK for 2013

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- The Pioneer League champion will join 10 other conference winners as automatic qualifiers for the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs, beginning in 2013.
The move is part of a plan, approved by the NCAA Division I Championships/Sport Management Cabinet this month, expanding the playoffs from 20 to 24 teams.
The top eight teams will be seeded, receive first-round byes and host second-round games. The 16 other teams will bid to host first-round games.
The 20-year-old Pioneer League is a football-only, non-scholarship league. It has never had an automatic bid, let alone a participant in the playoffs. The Ivy League and the Southwestern Athletic Conference play at the FCS level but choose not to participate in the playoffs. There are 124 FCS teams this year."

You know this is ok, cause the real champion will still be decided at the end.

If the 2013 playoff rules had been in effect last season this is what there would have been:
-20 teams that were in.
-Pioneer AQ would have been 9-2 San Diego. They played 2 Div II and 8 non scholly Pioneer teams. Only full scholly program they played was 4-7 UC Davis and was thumped 31-3.

The remaining 3 at large would have been:

If the NCAA hadn't kept the 7 Div I win threshold in place:
-Ill State: 7-4/5-3, didn't play a I-A, so 4-I-AA losses. Lost qtr finalist UNI 23-20 and @ NDSU 20-10.
-Delaware: 7-4/5-3, 6 Div I wins. 2 wins over playoff Towson and ODU. Losses to Navy, qtr finalist Maine, & bad losses to 5-6 UMass and 3-8 URI.
and ONE of the following 2:
-Georgetown: 8-3
-Bethune Cookman: 8-3

If the NCAA had kept the 7 Div I win threshold in place:
-Ill State: 7-4/5-3 (see above)
-Georgetown: 8-3
-Bethune Cookman: 8-3

You're also going to get 8 seeds out of this.

The more seeds the better.

More is not always better when it comes to playoffs. I'm forced to wonder how many of you will be actually happy if a 4-loss team wins a title. :twocents:

They'd still have to win five increasingly difficult games, and would end the season 12-4. That would be cool!

I get the feeling you're not happy with any outcome that isn't determined by a computer.

 Very funny...but only half right. I prefer being more exclusive than inclusive. Keeps the results much more tolerable.

This is the last I'll post on this, since I can already tell this will become a never-ending argument- but do you think there are really 24 teams worthy of winning the national title every year?

FWIW I think 16 is more than enough...but I won't exactly lose any sleep over 20 or 24.

Of course not; the number is 12. No one has yet shown me a program not ranked in the top 12 that ever won a NC. Continuing to expand it diminishes the importance of the regular season. 16 games is too much for any program, particularly small college. Last year we had a 6-5 team in; I guess we need more so a 5-6 can get in.

I don't recall a 6-5 team being in last year, but if so, they must have been an autobid, and nothing will change that.

If we went down to 12, who loses their autobids? The Patriot? OVC?

The better teams should prevail. But if you are full scholarship say in the CAA or SoCon and you get dumped by a Marist so be it. Its the play offs. :thumb:

You guys don't know how much of lucky SOBs you are. All we have to hear is "but it will interfere with academics".

Really? Is that why D-2 has a 16 team, and FCS has a 24 team? I wish they would just stop lying to us who are fans of FBS schools and say it's about the money. The bowl people want to get their money.

Think about it. It took 14 years of kicking and screaming for a playoff, and the best they do is a 4-team one with a selection committee. You do realize they are just replacing the computers with people right? And we have to put up with this 4-team fraudulent bullshit until 2025.

I vote for the Ivy League and SWAC participating, and expanding to 32. that would be a rate of about 26% in the playoffs. About half the number of FBS teams that make it to bowl games.

Well, how are you going to force the Ivy to participate when they don't want to?
How are you going to force the SWAC to give up the Heritage bowl?

You can't make leagues that don't want to participate..participate.

As of 2013 it will be 11 AQ and 13 At large. So even in the unlikely event that either the SWAC or the Ivy decided to participate, that would make it 12 AQ and 12 At Large, so there would be no need to expand past 24.

The only way it will expand past 24 if there was a 13th AQ league since there has to be 1 At Large for every AQ, and I don't see that happening for a long time.

It was at 16 teams for 24 seasons (86'-09'), and I expect it to be at 24 teams for a similarly long period.
