Here is an interesting thought. For the next at least 2-3 seasons PSU is going to go from recruiting mostly 3,4 and the occasional 5 star to mostly 2 and 3 star players. Basically like a low-mid level MAC or Slum Belt team, which JMU competes with for some recruits. Looking at the PSU roster it is mostly made up of players from PA, MD, NJ, and NY. Don't think that will change, just for the next 4 seasons they will be signing 60% of what they used to sign at a far lesser quality.

Looking at JMU's updated 2012 roster, have # of players from the following states:
MD: 12
NJ: 10
PA: 6
NY: 3

For at least the 13' and 14', and maybe 15' and 16' recruiting classes ( JMU might have at least announced a move up by then) could be competing head to head with PSU for some recruits.

I know could say the same thing about UD, Towson and Villanova as they recruit the same PA/MD/NJ/NY territory (Nova also recruits alot out of CA). YSU also to a lesser extent (1 see they have 6 players on current roster from western half of PA, 1 from MD, 1 from NJ, 0 from NY).

This would actually be a negative, because it would throw one more school into the mix in this recruiting region for about 4 years for the above I-AA schools to have to recruit against.

What about the transfers out of PSU to schools like JMU, Towson etc ? Kids that may want to play and be on winning programs . I dont think there will ba any restriction on kids leaving Penn St for other programs.

True, players can transfer and begin playing without sitting out a year. But does anyone have any scholarships available for this season? I'm afraid many of those players who want to transfer out won't have many options to do so.

they say PSU transfers won't count against the scholarship level. So does that mean is 3-4 decide to transfer to a UD or Towson and get hooked up with scholarships, does that mean that school would have 66-7scholarships but still only count as 63?

Andy- they're still working that out, but you're correct in what you're saying. So, yes a FCS school could go to 66 schollies per se, for just this year. For the 2013 season they need to be back out 63 so it means you have that many less to offer for February.

Keep in mind FBS may be the destination of a number of these kids. There were reports going around yesterday of FBS schools submitting lists of 25-35 PSU kids they were contacting/recruiting.

Most will probably go FBS if they transger. PSU may have to take a handful of players who were more FCS types in teh next 2-3 years, but I think they will end up getting a lot of the kids who are going to Temple or MAC schools. For them going to PSU and not playing in a bowl is better than going to Toledo, Temple, or Syracuse and not playing in a bowl. They will have a lot of trouble getting the blue-chippers until near the end of their sanctions. It will be interesting to see how they will fare in the Big 10.

I guess it really depends how many current players leave. It can get real ugly for a year or two if a lot of current players transfer as no matter how good the recruits are (and they probably won't be) they will be young and inexperienced.

I do think 13' amd 14' will be the bottom. Most of the guys from those classes will probbaly be gone, and the team will be full of young players who werent highly recruited. By 15' and 16' they may be pretty good. By then the younger guys playing in the really bad years will be older and have some experience, and they may by that point have some talented recruits who would be willing to come because sanctions would be expiring soon.

One thing that is certain is thatr O'Brien can recruit. He had a top 10 class before the sanctions were announced, and if he can even be somewhat respectable during the worst of the sanctions they may come roaring back. Or O'Brien leaves and they suck for 10 years.

Daryll Clark, Michael Zordich, Brandon Beachum are just three Youngstown natives that have or currently are playing at Penn State.

I can't see any of these Penn State kids going to the FCS when they can move to an FBS school without having to sit out any time. The USCs and Pitts of the world may get a couple bonus players, but I don't think anyone outside of a fifth string walk-on would drop down from the Big Ten to the CAA.

Even though PSU will be eligible for a bowl again with the 2016 season, after this season I don't expect to see PSU at .500 again/in a bowl, till at least 2019. That will be their 3rd full recruiting class after the 4 reduced recruiting classes (13'-16'). I've heard people on ESPN claim this is worse than a 1 yr death penalty and speculate it could be a decade till they're back in a bowl again. Think you could see 4-5 seasons at 1-4 wins.
