It's official: UND retires Fighting Sioux nickname
http://www.grandforksherald.com/even...roup/homepage/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The state Board of Higher Education has directed the University of North Dakota to retire its Fighting Sioux nickname.
So gone will be NCAA sanctions, UND will be known as University of North Dakota with the interlocking ND as the logo, and those wondering about the Ralph Engelstad Arena and its 2000+ logos...UND AD Brian Faison said UND who rents the REA (REA is privately owned and UND rents it for one dollar), is working with the REA, NCAA and the ND Attorney General in deciding what logos have to go. According to the 2007 settlement historical logos (IMO its the ones that would be very expensive to remove) can stay but some like on doors, and seats have to be replaced.
UND will have a new name in 2015 according to the "cooling off period" in the state law.

When will the Washington Redskins, the Cleveland Indians, the Florida State Semi-Holes, and the Atlanta Braves follow suit?

What a stupid decision. HONORING the school by saying your mascot, the symbol of your school is an Indian isn't offensive. The pussification of America (and North Dakota) continues.
What's next? Changing the Detroit Lions to the Detroit Butterflys b/c thier performance is offensive to the nature of Lions?
Congrats NCAA, money well spent.

If I was a lion (animal) I wouldn't want Detroit honoring me.

BSC Commissioner comments on nickname vote

BSC Commissioner Doug Fullerton said the team will play without a mascot for the season while things calm down. They’ll use the school letters logo instead.
Fullerton says the state decision put the conference at ease. “It is a relief for all of us including the president of UND, who I just got off the phone with. He's very excited,” Fullerton said Wednesday.
“We had spent the last year kind of assessing what the issues would be with our local Native American people in Montana; in Pocatello, ID; in Flagstaff, AZ; in Sacramento, CA, and we found that they were very concerned,” he said.
The vote sends the matter back to the state's Board of Higher Education, which is expected to re-retire the nickname and American Indian head logo. Seven years ago the NCAA deemed it hostile and abusive. It threatened penalties against the athletic teams if the name and logo weren't replaced.
The NDSBoHE told UND today to retire the name.

Dude, I'm on your side on a lot of things.
But stop fucking posting a new fucking thread for every fucking UND thing. One nickname thread would have covered about 80000000000 fucking threads.

I like ya Darrel - but agree with Clenz (although would word it slightly different

). Let's keep all Sioux nickname related stuff into one thread. Any way a mod can merge threads?

ODU had this happen to them. That's why they have a lion(historical) in their logo and mascot, but are called the Monarch butterflies.

Naming your mascot after a Native American tribe is almost as bad as naming your mascot after a poor animal forced to fight to the death in an illegal gambling activity, like cock fighting.
Yeah, that's right
South Carolina, I'm looking at you!

Like a...hen?
Anyway, South Carolina's mascot isn't named directly for the bird.
The unique moniker is held in honor of Thomas Sumter, a South Carolina war hero who was given the name "The Carolina Gamecock" during the American Revolution for his fierce fighting tactics, regardless of his physical stature or the size of his regiment. A British General commented that Sumter "fought like a gamecock

Oh OK. My bad.
Well if there are any
other schools thinking about a Fightin' chicken type mascot out there, then they should be forewarned that it won't fly in a world that I live in, God damn it!

There are 19 american universities with the Gamecock mascot.
AT least Coastal went with a fighting chicken that doesn't exist. We were thoughtful.

Since that is no longer a team name....you are offending the Sioux tribes. Just like saying Sioux suck... its offensive to Native Americans (sorry NDSU fans).
