Liberty University is seeking to compete at the Division I level for its football program.

Chancellor and President Jerry Falwell Jr. said Saturday that the private Christian university has conducted a feasibility study to examine whether it can compete effectively at the Division I Football Bowl Subdivision level. The school's other programs already have full NCAA Division I status.

The football team currently competes at the Football Championship Subdivision level, formerly known as Division I-AA, in the Big South Conference.

Falwell and Liberty athletics officials say they plan to discuss the feasibility study in more detail next week.

With NMSU, Idaho, GSU, and App. State in line looking for a spot I don't see them getting one.

Don't act like this is anything new. Liberty-connected people have known about founder Jerry Falwell's FBS ambitions for years. The school is merely carrying out his wishes. Falwell wanted Liberty to be known as the Protestant Notre Dame/BYU. I find nothing wrong with that, although I do think that it could have been done while remaining in FCS, where the football is better, IMO.

Fify.

For the love of God, do not confuse other Protestants with that perverted, evil (thankfully dead) bigot, thank you very much.

Not much to this, remember Jacksonville St.'s study where they want to move to fbs? Doesn't really matter if no one wants you.

App St.
Georgia Southern
JMU
Delaware
Lamar

would be the schools to watch that have the MAC and SBC w/ their eyes on them for a spot between now and 5 years from now. JMU might even find a spot in CUSA, down the road.

SHSU, Liberty, Jacksonville St., Illinois St. have all done fbs studies but will have a loooooooooog wait for a spot.

I doubt Liberty finds a conference, but I hear the WAC is pretty desperate.

And SH, were you joking with that Protestant comment? You attend LU (online). :?

No body in their right mind would want to associate with Liberty. They are way too radical for most to even be comfortable around. Plus I don't think you can even tailgate there, since they don't believe in alcohol (Not sure they might allow foreigners to bring booze in the parking lot). It is defiantly gonna be a tough sale to see them move on, yet anything is better then the Big South. They are gonna to have to find probably the most desperate conference possible.

BYU doesn't allow alcohol either, and it still remains one of the best atmosphere's I've been too.

This just means you haven't been to many stadiums with rocking atmospheres. :ugeek:

Have you been to a BYU game?

Montana, Tennessee, Iowa, and Iowa State are pretty good atmospheres....plus the UNI-App State title game.... :kisswink:

I, admittedly, haven't been too many places....but if Iowa State is a top level atmosphere I have lost all hope in going to big time games in search of a great atmosphere.

Not too many conferences want BYU either...didn't the PAC12 tell them no...and as desperate as the big12 was at one point there was no interest there. BYU and Liberty are nothing like Notre Dame, if anyone can't see that they may be one of the least intellegent people talking college athletics.

No conference wants anything to do with Mormon or or Falwell University.....BYU may find a home only because of their football program but they have a deal similar to ND with being Indy in fb right now

No. I was serious as all get out. Jerry Falwell had the idea, stated many times over the years, that if anything is to be labeled "Christian," it should be better. For many years, people got away with putting out stuff that was technical garbage, but it sold because it had the tag. He wanted to get away from that. It's starting to happen in music. (Actually, there's been good stuff out there for quite some time, but the stupid Grammy's won't recognize that there's a difference between CCM and Christian rap, or any other genre.) The former top-selling group DC Talk was formed at Liberty. The three bandmates have since gone solo, though Michael Tait signed on to become the frontman for the Aussie band The Newsboys. Falwell's goal was to have a university experience that was top notch from a Christian perspective. IMO, the school has delivered, at least in the academic arena. The school is well-known nationwide in many areas from Law to Aeronautics to Debate. Now, the school wants to extend that to sports as well. The Flames have already had people drafted in the NFL and MLB, and perhaps elsewhere. They are dominating the Big South in track (and nationally, at least occasionally, in some events). The desire is to extend that domination in football. I'm not so certain that going FBS is the way to do that, but being the Protestant Notre Dame/BYU is certainly a laudable goal. Again, I think that the way to do that would be to develop to a point of dominating FCS. Most people I know disagree with me, but to me a title determined on the field as opposed to a bloody computer is a REAL title.

Chancellor Jerry Falwell, Jr. wrote:Competing at the highest levels of collegiate competition has been the vision for Liberty University since its founding in 1971. It is exciting to watch the fulfillment of that dream taking shape as Liberty now has the financial resources, facilities, academic support and athletics professionals necessary to move forward.

Liberty will stumble in the FBS. Marshall was a lot better program and they have had a rough time. Liberty not only doesn't allow alcohol, they don't allow the other evils of the world like Democrats and Gays.Very open-minded. I also won't miss Liberty.

FWIW, Liberty is going nowhere as of yet. The NCAA no longer allows a move from FCS to FBS Indy status. A school wanting to move up MUST find a conference first. That has not happened yet.

I am amazed at the level of intolerance exhibited here by those who preach tolerance and diversity as the ultimate social utopia.

Hypocrisy is not wasted on those of the liberal persuasion. They are for free speech as long as you don't say anything they disagree with. All for tolerance, except for Evangelical Christians, Republicans and Caucasians. Makes your hate speech sound very shallow. Kinda like our guvment, do as I say, not as I do.

Hate on my friends!!!!
