ASU Fans - Travel Help Please!!

App State fans: I am seriously considering coming to Boone for the Griz game this year...a little birthday present to myself.

I'm looking for info on where all the partying occurs around the university after the Griz maul the Mountaineers, and I'm looking for advice on where to stay near that action so I don't have to drive anywhere after getting blitzed in a victory celebration.

Also wondering, where's the best place to fly into? Charlotte? Raleigh/Durham? Greenville SC?

Advice, please....

I'll only speak to the airport/hotel situation since the Boone bar scene is pretty fluid.

Raleigh/Durham is too far away - there are better options. You might also try Asheville (ASH) just in case - very small airport, but around 90 miles from Boone.

Greensboro/Winston-Salem (PTI) is around a 1.5 hr drive - smaller, probably will take a connection to get in
Charlotte (CLT) is around 2 hrs to Boone - largest of the three, probably can get in with a direct flight
Greenville (GSP) is just over 2.5 hrs. We have Southwest here which might be a good thing

I've stayed at the Courtyard, Holiday Inn Express, Country Inn & Suites, Comfort Suites all of which were fine and pretty close to downtown. Blowing Rock (8 miles away) has a number of decent hotels, some good bars, and good restaurants. We stay there more often than Boone since we can park the car at the hotel and walk everywhere.

Edit: one more option depending on how many you have with you is logcabinrentals.com in Valle Crucis. Around 8 mi from Boone, but high end cabins usually with hot tubs kind of out in the sticks. We did a three bedroom for 6 people for a total of $525/two nights ($175/couple for the weekend) and were able to do our own cooking. Just a thought.

Pretty good advice. If there are several Grizz fans going that you know, the cabin may be the best option provided you have a designated driver or are willing to spring for a cab. There are a number of motels within a mile or so of downtown if you don't mind walking. The closest motel to the action is the Boone Trail Motel, "$24.99/ Two people/one bed". You might not want to go there.

There are bars, but many change names/locations from year to year. The best bet is on King Street. I'm partial to Murphy's because it's been around a long time and is frequented by more locals. The Boone Saloon is pretty good and likely to have live music. Of course I haven't lived in Boone in over a decade, maybe some of the younger posters can give some better advice on the party scene.

I would recommend getting a room as soon as possible. I looked on Orbitz and the pickings are slim.

If I were coming from out of town to a game... I'd stay at the LaQuinta on the corner of 105 and 421. It's walking distance to the game, lots of bars, and it's decently nice. No idea if they're booked up or not.

I'd recommend Cafe Portofino or Town Tavern after the game. The other options recommended are good... but, lack the tv's necessary for a fall Saturday night, imo.

Just did a quick check, leave PHX 9AM 9/7 return 12N 9/9

GSP (1 stop) $311 Delta
GSO (1 stop) $368 Delta
CLT (1 stop) $374 United, nonstop $494 United

Doesn't look too bad for cross country. :twocents:

This was Orbitz, but just trying to get hand grenade close on what you'd be looking at expense wise. Layover times, etc. didn't really factor into my numbers either.

Should be 32-33K for this one - likely a new KBS record.

If I don't get into LOTOJA, I am going to do my best to make this trip with my wife. I've been trying to convince her, but it has fallen on deaf ears so far. Lots of time to convince her and I should know in a few weeks if I get into LOTOJA.

Nice picture. Why did you Photoshop in the track around the field?

JMU @ ASU playoff game 07'. O dark early Thanksgiving day took a train to Connecticut for a family gathering. That Fri I flew New Haven-Philly- Raleigh/Durham, picked up a rental, and drove the close to 3 hrs to Boone. That Sat after the game I had to drive back to RDU to catch a night flight to Philly since I had to work the next day. If I wasn't booking last minute, $ wasn't an issue, and had more flexibility in my schedule, I wouldn't have flown in to RDU. I agree- there are closer, better options.

I stayed at the Broyhill Inn on/near campus. Believe its operated by ASU. As I recall, was nice.

Was also travelling through Boone mid week last fall and stayed at the Hampton Inn Boone. Was very nice for a Hampton Inn. Believe was recently renovated. 1/2 mile from campus.

Course both those places may be sold out......

Broyhill Inn is closed now. It's now an "activity center" or exactly something similar... not sure what it's used for now but no longer a hotel.

Flying into G-Boro can be 15%+ less expensive than flying into Carlotte.

The catch: You actually fly through Carlotte and puddle-jump to the Piedmont Triad airport. It's actually a nicer drive from the Triad going I-40 west to US Hwy 421 north.

Your trip will not be complete without a good Woodlands drunk topped off by a pork Burritalotta with extra jalapenos but, alas, it is 7 miles south of Boone in Blowing Rock.

Absolutely agree with the flying into GBO. Whatever you do, avoid flying into CLT, you'll pay big time $$$ to do so. The Carolina Panthers will be on the road in week one of the NFL season that weekend due to the DNC being in town, so the idea of a ASU/Griz - NFL doubleheader is out.

Unfortunately that is true. It's being turned into student housing I believe.
