Ryan's prediction of the future of the BSC

Yes I know talking about conf affiliations for some is getting old, but I think its an interesting topic and it really could effect the Big Sky and it could start as early as next month.

In just a short while, I honestly think the Big Sky will look like this.

Football:

Cal Poly
Eastern Washington
Idaho
Idaho State
Montana
Montana State
North Dakota
Northern Arizona
Northern Colorado
Portland State
Sacramento State
Southern Utah
UC Davis
Weber State

Basketball:

Boise State
Denver
Eastern Washington
Idaho
Idaho State
Montana
Montana State
North Dakota
Northern Arizona
Northern Colorado
Portland State
Sacramento State
Southern Utah
Utah Valley
Weber State

I think the WAC is going to dissolve rather quickly here real soon, and it will start when the "Mountain USA" super conference takes USU and Lou Tech, and the Belt takes the Texas twins and NMSU (after losing N. Texas and possibly both FL schools to the super conference).

Boise could put basketball in the Big West, but im not sure the Big West would take them, but they took Hawaii so you never know.

Seattle I believe goes to the WCC, (But BSC affiliate membership is not out of the question)

Now the topic of San Jose,

Option A. They drop football, and move all other sports to the Big West.
Option B. They wont be full members in the Sky, but if they keep football, they may be football only affiliates in the Sky and everything else in the BW.

What do you guys think?

I think (as much as I might wish otherwise) there's not a snowball's chance in hell of Idaho or Boise EVER coming back to the BSC for ANYTHING, and similarly there's no way SJSU ever drops down either.

I agree about San Jose, I think they would drop football before dropping down, and move all thier olympic sports to the BW.

And if the WAC dies, and nobody wants them, I think Idaho would actually come back, there is no way they can survive being independant.

Boise State- if the Big West doesnt want them and they cant get in the WCC, then thier real only option is the Big Sky for thier olympic sports. The Mtn West doesnt want affiliate members, that's why they kicked Boise's olympic sports out in the first place after Boise sent football to the BE.

I think there's a better chance for that snowball in hell than many people think.

Idaho will exhaust all options to stay playing FBS football. Problem is, they may not have many options soon other than Sunbelt or Indy. I think even most Idaho fans realize that they wouldn't last more than a few years as an Indy. The loss of guaranteed home games would kill them, and even as a WAC member they bring in mostly FCS teams for OOC home games. Not sure how'd they get the minimum number of home games required with no conference affiliation.

Where is Kem with a timely “the BSC is dying” post. Amazing with this WAC dying stuff, Fullerton called the WAC out and is looking like a genius (minus the UND add) right about now. Who would have fucking guessed.

Is there a minimum required number of home games? SHSU will only have two (three if you count the rather close neutral site game). Of course, that's FCS, but the question still remains: Is one required to have four to six home games? It sucks from a travel perspective (not to mention in terms of maintaining fan interest) to have few home games (I know that from experience at UOP), but couldn't a team theoretically play a complete barnstorming schedule? My high school was forced to do that a couple of years ago while the idiots in charge of our district couldn't get our statdium remodel done in time. The only way we got a home game at all that year was to get a 12-5 upset in the playoffs AND get a nearby school to pull the 13-4 upset so we could host a rare 13-12 game. Surely a college team could do the same, right?

(Bad idea, I know. But it should at least be possible, one would think.)

I am pretty sure FBS teams have to play a minimum of 4 home games. FCS could be different.

I think the big question is whats the future of FBS? I think in 7-10 years it could be a different landscape. There's already a partial divide between BCS and non BCS conferences and more and more the non BCS conferences are having more in common with FCS by virtue of their lack of mega TV packages.

Has SJSU said anything about not wanting to be in FCS? I'm just trying to figure out where this came from that they'd drop football before moving to FCS.

Idaho I believe would only come kicking and screaming. Going back to FCS would be a bigger blow to them than SJSU going FCS.

But if something wild happened and FBS/FCS merged and the BCS conferences had their own division (I don't see those conferences leaving the NCAA anytime soon) then those two teams are likely Big Sky candidates. Or the stronger teams from the Big Sky merge with a few other teams and form a new conference.

If the latter happened I could see:
Sac State
UC Davis
Cal Poly
EWU (Griz fans will howl at this but the program is going in the right direction with an upward trend in fan support the last decade and it appears a major stadium renovation is coming soon)
Montana
Montana State
Weber State
Idaho
San Jose State
Utah State

Well sure, because 12-5 and 13-4 are such COMMON scores... :? :?

Those weren't scores, AZ. Those were the seed pairings in the first round. Have you already forgotten the NCAA tournament?

I know it's a big assumption, but it's generally known that when you seed to 16 teams without play-ins or byes that the 12 seed travels to the 5 seed and that the 13 seed travels to the 4 seed.

;)

I don’t think so. SJSU posters on the WAC board would rather cut football than go to FCS, and that is probably what will happen if the WAC folds its football operations. I honestly don’t believe we will see any FBS programs move down to FCS, even if that means keeping a football program around campus. WAC programs left behind will slowly die off in Indy status if they are unable to land a conference invite. :twocents:

From some of the things I have heard, Idaho DOES NOT want to drop football, and would come back to the Sky if need be, but I think Ranger is right, they will stay FBS as long as they can and do everything they can to remain FBS, before dropping, so it could be a total of 4-5 years before Idaho rejoins as football, but I can see them coming back in hoops as early as next year if there is no WAC

They will not merge as a All-Sport conference because they would lose money from the departing schools and more importantly only receive one auto-bid in basketball. What will most likely happen now is an alliance in olympic sports and football form a seperate conference.

Ok so if the merger doesnt happen, an alliance still will, and I still think the MW and the CUSA add schools to thier respected conferences

So far the Mtn. West sits at (football)

1. Air Force (Cant remember if they accepted the Big East bid or not, if not I think they stay)
2. Colorado State
3. New Mexico
4. UNLV
5. Wyominh
6. Fresno State
7. Hawaii
8. Nevada
Adds 2 members
9. Utah State
10. San Jose State

CUSA + 2 new members North Texas and FIU

1. UAB
2. S. Miss
3. Tulane
4. ECU
5. Marshall
6. Rice
7. UTEP
8. Tulsa
+
9. North Texas
10. FIU

Sun Belt takes Lou Tech, N.Mex State and the Texas twins

1. Ark St
2. FAU
3. ULL
4.ULM
5. MTSU
6. South Alabama (2013)
7. Troy
8. WKU
9. Lou Tech
10. N.Mex St
11. Texas St
12. Texas SA

Big Sky + Idaho (yes Idaho)

1. Cal Poly
2. Eastern Washington
3. Idaho
4. Idaho State
5. Montana
6. Montana State
7. North Dakota
8. Northern Arizona
9. Northern Colorado
10. Portland State
11. Sacramento State
12. Southern Utah
13. UC Davis
14. Weber State

Now for the hoops part, I think the Big Sky would want to stop at 14, heck might even stop at 12 with the addition of Idaho. But right now we are at 11. so if it is 12, I think Idaho is in no matter what, so if it goes to 14 than you have 4 teams fighting for 2 spots.

In order of most likely to least likely

1. Denver
2. UVU
3. Seattle
4. Boise State (once the WAC dies they will have no home for thier olympic teams, perfect fit for BSC.

Heard today that the MWC commish was visiting SJSU and USU's campuses last week. If they go to the MWC Idaho is reduced to the Sun Belt (if the conference would even want them), indy, or dropping back down. Idaho just renovated the Kibbie Dome so I don't think they are interested in dumping football.

Going back to the BSC is clearly their best choice. Before moving up they were an FCS power with well above average attendance, and 4 geographic rivals including one in-state. They also used to make the tournament in hoops.

Idaho was in the Sun Belt prior to the Wac, so either way they'll end up in a former conference. But would the Sun Belt want them back? Who knows... But going Independent is NOT a valid option these days. It only works for Notre Dame and BYU due to their large fanbases and obscene amounts of money they have...

Right.

So again, play in a piss poor conference where your nearest conference brethren is probably Arkansas State, with the hopes of at best getting to a bowl with no payoff, and very little national or tv exposure or swallow your pride and go back to what is perhaps the top FCS conference in the nation, with a new regional tv contract, historical rivalries, 4 or 5 conference bus trip games, and where you are not only competitive, but would enter the game already having superior facilities to most programs and a solid chance to not only be competitive, but compete for a national title.

I dont see the Sun Belt taking them back, the Belt has been trying to push Denver out for a while now, dont see why they would want Idaho.

I'd gladly trade Idaho for UND and NoCo.

North Dakota and Northern Colorado are geographic outliers. Without them, you can draw almost a straight line from Bozeman down through Idaho Falls, Provo, St. George & Flagstaff. NoCo is 500+ miles EAST of their closest geograhic rival (Weber State) and UND is 825+ miles from Bozeman.

Send UND to the MFVC (a MUCH better georgraphic fit) and send UNC packing back to D-II. 2 6-team divisions with 5 inner-division games and rotating the 6 other teams 3 a year, leaving 3 OOC games as well, all while improving conference strength and reducing travel expenses.

As much as I would like to agree with you there, AZ, I'm not so sure that UNC's programs that have won BSC titles (and, yes, they do exist) would appreciate moving back to D-II. There are very few programs that are allowed to remain at D-I when the football team is in D-II.

That said, for FOOTBALL, BOYS HOOPS, and BOYS TENNIS, UNC is way below par.

UNC at one time had a kick ass football program back in the NCC days of DII, but seems like when they hit DI the cellar opened up and UNC decided to make a camp there.
