The Sun Belt is where it's at! Look at the potential glamour opponents that would roll into KB Stadium on a regular basis:

North Texas
Florida International
Louisiana Monroe?

Are you kidding me G8? That is fucking SEXY football!
Spoiler: show
On a serious note, you guys have built your brand tremendously in the past seven years. Why would you destroy it with one signature?

The Sun Belt is going to become fairly relevant once conference MWCUSA overtake the WAC.. might be a higher rated conference than the MAC.. a program like AppSt would probably leap-frog them over the MAC.

Unless the new C-MWC expands to 24, taking any semi-desirable team the sunbelt has.

That is possible, dbackjon. But is certainly not a given. Not every school has the budget to travel as extensively as MWCUSA will require for very little improved exposure. It wouldn't shock me to see UAB drop down to the Sun Belt.

That's kind of my issue as well. It seems that most of App's options for a move up are geographic nightmares for the traveling fan (I know Big Sky, I know). We EC'ers are generally pretty spoiled with the concentration of conference mates within a reasonable drive.

Hard to say this until we know what the conference will look like.

4 Divisions of 6 teams... something like this... wouldn't be much travel:

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Eastern Conference

Eastern Division: East Carolina, Marshall, Appalachian State, UNCC, JMU, Georgia State

Central Division: Rice, Southern Miss, Tulane, Tulsa, UAB, North Texas

Western Conference

Mountain Division: Air Force, Colorado State, New Mexico, UTEP, Wyoming, New Mexico State

Pacific Division: Fresno State, Hawaii, Nevada, UNLV, Utah State, San Jose State
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You would rotate teams from the other divisions and conferences... so you might have to travel a long distance for a game or two per year... but, I think that would make sense geographically.

Who knows what teams would be added or what the conference will end up looking like -- I'm just saying that it's not a given that travel will be a bitch for an east coast team.

And, this conference would have WAYYYYYYY more exposure than the SoCon. We're on a handful of PBS stations for fuck's sake. This conference would actually get paid money for the right to broadcast their games. :o

That's not a bad plan. Interesting.

east side fan wrote:Here is a spin on things! What if the new MWCUSA conference picked up several teams for the sunbelt. Then App could join the sunbelt with the likes of JMU, ODU, Gsu. It would go along way toward forming the start up conference that alot of people have been talking about. The sunbelt might not be so bad depending on how things pan out.
Because when you really step back for a moment, when you think of places like Huntington, WV, Harrisonburg, VA, and Boone, NC, it just screams "SUNBELT".

Almost as much as Boise, Idaho screams "BIG EAST".

A useless blog post.

And unless I missed it, Appalachian has not released any type of financial plan for operations, schollies, facilities and Title IX requirements other than say "corporate sponsors and ticket revenues" will pay for it.

Yeah. Right.

Normally, I would agree with Mr. T, but I gotta question THIS one. In the FBS world, the only folk who get any lasting attention (outside of individual teams like Boise) are the Pac-12, the Big Ten, the SEC, and to a lesser degree, the Big XII and the Big East. The "big boys," especially the elitist pigs in the Big Ten and the SEC, go out of their way to ensure that nobody outside of those conferences (and the Domers) even get talked about, much less a title invite.

How much more "irrelevant" can one get? At least here in the FCS, everyone short of the Ivies (by their own choice), the Pioneer (by their own DIFFERENT choice) and the SWAC (by their own THIRD choice) has a chance to be part of the conversation, which is the way it should be. Relevance by fiat (which is the law of the land in FBS Land) is STUPID.
