BISMARCK — Sen. Lonnie Laffen, R-Grand Forks, who earlier this year voted with the majority to give UND’s Fighting Sioux nickname the authority of law, will introduce the much-anticipated bill to repeal that law today at the start of a special session.
It will be a straightforward repeal of the law shephered through the regular session by House Majority Leader Al Carlson, R-Fargo, Laffen said Sunday.
So, here is what life would be like without a conference affiliation:
** First, one has to remember that schools schedule their conference teams. It’s the reason a school belongs to a conference. If UND has no conference, then the university simply has no one to play.
A week ago, the UND football team played a National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics team, which is two levels below NCAA Division I. The UND athletic department currently has to “buy” these NAIA teams to come here and play at a cost of $50,000 to $60,000. An independent, Division I FCS team costs $150,000.
A university simply can’t sustain an athletic program if it has to pay every team to come to play.
** Second, there are not enough independent Division I FCS schools to fill a schedule. There are currently 124 FCS schools, and 120 of them play in a conference. That leaves four independents (two in Texas, one in Georgia and one in Alabama).
Come January and February, the conferences’ basketball teams all will play their respective conference schools, and UND will find it impossible to fill its schedule. The Big Sky Conference gives UND eight football and 20 FCS basketball opponents every year in men’s sports alone.
** Third, many schools are lining up to exclude us. Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa have policies that state that unless they are required by their conference, they will not play us.
Minnesota and Wisconsin both leave the WCHA hockey conference at the end of this year, so all three of these schools will prohibit play with UND starting in April.
** Fourth, under current NCAA sanctions, UND is not allowed to host NCAA playoff events on campus. That will likely impact UND in April when the women’s hockey team, currently ranked seventh in the nation, will begin playoff hockey.

Even though I am for the Fighting Sioux nickname, its better to let it go and go forward and be known as THE University of North Dakota, nicknames can come later.

I agree. Now with this Spirit Lake lawsuit bearing its ugly head to this vote I don't know how its gonna sway. Before this lawsuit came up even Al Carlson said there was enough votes to repeal it (him NOT being one of them just to stick it to the NCAA), but now this lawsuit may impact the votes. They need to repeal it, then the SBoHE will tell President Kelley to resume the retirement process...again, and then I do believe UND will come off of the H&A list which we have been on since August 15th. I know Kelley said UND would like to retire the name by Dec. 31st.

As opposed to the multitude of ODU threads about nothing in particular.

Here's to hoping that the law is repealed and UND can put this whole mess in the rear view mirror and get ready for big sky play starting in 2012......

Fun Fact: NDSU is 3-10 against THE MIGHTY FIGHTING SIOUX in football over the last 13 games.
Another Fun Fact: lakes was originally named Sue by his foster parents, but changed it when he turned 18 and entered a committed relationship with JaBBer.

I hope they keep the name. If nothing else...it will kill Lakes and JBB.
Re: Fate of Sioux Nickname starts in a few hours!!
The Senate Delayed Bills Committee today accepted for introduction a bill to repeal the Legislature’s mandate that UND continue to use the Fighting Sioux nickname.
All five members of the committee voted to accept the bill, which will be heard at a joint meeting of the House and Senate education committees at 2:30 this afternoon.
BISMARCK, N.D. - As he wrapped up his address to a joint session of the North Dakota Legislature here today, Gov. Jack Dalrymple urged lawmakers to pass a bill to be introduced later today by Sen. Lonnie Laffen, R-Grand Forks, returning authority over the issue of UND's Fighting Sioux nickname back to the State Board of Higher Education.
"I believe it was worth the effort to do everything we could to keep" the nickname and logo, Dalrymple said, but "it is time to move forward." The remarks were greeted by applause.
This may be a good sign that the bill may pass.

It won't kill lakes. I for one wish the whole thing was over... It's gotten so annoying that I don't even care anymore. Just move on with it. What ever they end up changing their name to, it won't be the same with the "Bison/Sioux" rivalry. It's a shame...

Another little fun fact for you:
UND has only won 17 times against NDSU in football since 1960. In that span NDSU brought home a National Championship Trophy 8 times while UND only once. HMMMMMMMMMMMMMM.....that means prior to the 3-10 record UND only won 7 times from 1960-1993.

Try 11. But how about this....62-45-3 That record says it all!!

In the case of UND/NDSU the results of both are the same....UND winning.

this is hilarious, NDSU trumps every dam thing the NAIA beaters do. EVERYTHING.
this isnt even a debatable, its been since 2003. Past 8 Years NDSU has proven themselves as Winners.
past 8 years und hasnt done shit, not even a signature win in football or basketball, not 1.

I guess as long as NDSU wins ONE game each year they can be considered winners.

I would like to see this issue in the rear view mirror.
North Dakota needed to convince 2 Sioux tribes of 7000 and 8000 people, plus some Chippewa, and only got one Sioux tribe to agree. It is time to move on.
And it was a lousy political trick by NDSU supporters in the legislature to put UND in the bind they did.
But worst of all is having to endure the ludicrous remarks of Lakes Bison. Unfortunately, this one isn't going to end.
