Week 3: Missouri Valley Conference Power Rankings

1. North Dakota State: Defeated St. Francis (PA) with ease, 56-3.
2. Northern Iowa: Avenged a loss to Stephen F. Austin last year at the UNI Dome, by defeating SFA 34-23 down in Texas.
3. Southern Illinois: Lost to Ole Miss 42-24. Great offensive production against an SEC defense.
4. Youngstown State: Annihilated the worst FCS team on the planet, Valpo, 77-12. Penguins dominated in every facet and left with no injuries. Huge contest at home next week vs. Illinois State. YSU will look to avenge a loss at ILSU last year in which the Redbirds won on back-to-back Hail Mary's to score with under :30 left.
5. Illinois State: Rebounded from a bad loss vs. Eastern Illinois to defeat Morehead State 52-21. We will see if they are for real next week at Youngstown State.
6. South Dakota State: Destroyed 56-3 at Illinois. Awful performance for SDSU, a team that had played much better against FBS foes in recent years.
7. Indiana State: Not a pretty win at home, but it was a win. 48-34 over Butler. Their defense may struggle mightily this year if they are giving up 34 to a Pioneer team.
8. Western Illinois: Won 35-21 over Jacksonville. They had to win this one and did, although it was far from convincing.
9. Missouri State: Surprisingly good showing at Eastern Kentucky, but still a 28-24 loss.

Not sold on SDSU, what have they done to be that high in your opinion?

They won a game against a good FCS school in SUU. The season is only 2 games old, so a lot could change even next week. IMO, Morehead St isn't as good as SUU.

They actually won a game over a pretty good FCS school, that is why they deserve to be that high. The ILSU win is against a bad FCS school. As is Indiana State's and Western Illinois'. And then we have your Bears...

Can't find the logic as to how you could put NDSU at 1 over UNI at this point. Two home cupcakes for NDSU, and two really tough road games for UNI.

..or how you put them ahead of SIU who has beaten a legit FCS squad and played well against an SEC team.....
.....this season the MVC will be the traditional SIU/UNI contest.

Not to mention that UNI will probably be in the top 2 in the nation in tomorrow's poll, and you have them ranked #2 in their own conference.

I started the year 1. NDSU and 2. UNI. I have yet to find a reason to change that. Again I feel NDSU is the best team in the league, but that is just me.
Does it really matter though? We are two weeks into the season. The rankings will evolve in the next few weeks.

UNI picks up three of the 4 player of the week honors, had the best win, and has looked the best against pretty good competiton - rather than glorified D3 schools....They get my nod at 1 and SIU gets 2

Who does everybody open conference play with? Obviously the guins and redbirds go at this weekend, but who does everyone else have next week? Bison have the Redbirds after the Gopher game three weeks from now, it will be interesting to the Redbird/Guin results......Youngstown could be a sleeper team this year and finish in the top 3 in the Valley.

Its amazing that SDSU beats a good team one week and then gets blown out by a FBS school and all of a sudden they suck.

I may be wrong, but it may have been you, that was telling everyone how SDSU has been competitive against FBS teams for the past 4-5 years.
Well UNI loses to Iowa State by 1. YSU trailed 21-6 midway thru the 4th quarter before a INT that led to a redzone TD made it 28-6. SIU put up a great showing at Ole Miss, especially in the 2nd half. Then there is INSU that was never in the game vs. Penn State and SDSU that got absolutely annihilated at Illinois, which may be the worst of all of the FBS teams mentioned in this post.

You might suck if you lose to Illinois by more than 50 points.

How dare I mention that SDSU had been competitive in the past against FBS teams

And this knock coming from the guy who has predicted the second coming of Youngstown for how long now and may finally be right?
And I am sure it is impossible for a team to have a bad game, and that having such a bad game against a FBS team would accentuate the poor play of the day. Anyways, its still early in the season, and I was more just pointing out how wildly people will swing for their preconceptions and predictions compared to how they will swing against them.

And they may suck, but since I am wearing blue and yellow glasses I'm putting more stock into the SUU game I guess.
