Ivy League coaches still clamor for chance at playoffs

For The Star-Ledger

In-season practice limitations will be implemented when Ivy League football teams hit the field in a couple of weeks. And when the season begins the weekend of Sept. 17, night games will fall across the schedule like never before.

Yes, winds of change are rustling the Ancient Eight, and coaches on yesterday’s teleconference seemed to agree the balance and competition in the league will be the best in years.

But one thing hasn’t changed: Games that are played after the Ivy League season. There are none.

As the league enters its 56th season, its stance on post-season play remains as unyielding as Marge Simpson’s beehive.

The coaches, as always, would love to join the FCS playoff party.

They spelled the Princeton coach's name wrong. Otherwise, great article. Time for Ivy League playoff football. It's only going to effect (or is it affect) one team per year, anyway.

Since the Ivy League plays in all other NCAA playoffs, it makes no sense not to participate in the FCS playoffs. The coaches and athletic directors need to put pressure on their presidents. This makes no sense.

That's the boldest statement I've ever seen Tim Murphy make on the subject. As recently as two years ago, he was satisfied to end the season with Harvard-Yale. I'm no fan of Harvard's current president -- her academic specialty in history is American women in the civil war era, and she's a cipher in matters of athletics -- so we'll have to see how this plays out. Since I haven't given Harvard any dough since 2005, partly because of her, my leverage is limited!

I quit the Football Y Association several years ago because they do nothing to promote two things that all IVY fans, coaches, and players want. An 11th game and playoffs.

They still do nothing..........and still send me a statement for dues every fall.
