Steele high on Portland State-One reason why

Myles Wade, 6 ft 300 lb DL transfer from Texas Tech. Got his degree from Texas Tech and enrolled in graduate studies at Portland State mainly because his father has some health issues. Will have one year of eligibility. Was a high school All-American from Portland Central Catholic so he is a local kid.
A writeup of his and a few other's first day of practice, courtesy of Ian Ruder

Played for an Arizona JC for one year and had scholarship offers to both Oregon and Oregon State as well as Texas Tech.
MY TAKE---A wait and see approach. I've seen so many hyped up FBS transfers not pan out, both for PSU and other Big Sky schools. With one year of eligibility, Wade will need to make an impact right away. We will know quickly if we can rest our expectations on him this year or not.

This is a perfect example of why there should be flexibility in transfer rules. I hope this transfer works out. So long as he plays it legit like Peyton Manning, it should work out fine. I just hope he doesn't turn into Matt Leinart. Given the circumstances of the move however, it seems that the expectation should be closer to Manning than Leinart. Much closer.

PSU is my 2011 BSC Dark Horse. The Vikings return a lot on both sides of the ball. If the defense can get it together I think the Vikings will knock off some people this year.

You hit the nail on the head with the "if the defense can get it together". What Burton is gambling on is Wade, who even if he is as good as advertised, will only have one year to gel; Julious Moore, who for some reason reneged on scholarship offers to both Washington and UCLA and ended up at PSU; and Carl Sommer, who was benched by Glanville after transferring from Oregon State for not knowing the assignments and lack of work ethics. Both Sommer and Moore are coming off good seasons last year but they all need to grow up for the Vikings to have success this year. Keep in mind, the defense was ranked 115th in all of FCS last year.

I am happy that PSU is in Missoula this year, otherwise I would be more nervous for sure...

You realize by saying things like this you are only making the MVC look worse, as they are rated well below the BSC.

Im as nervous as heck, the last few Weber/PSU games have been crazy to say the least, and this one is in Portland. I dont know why, but these two teams just play the strangest games, entertaining, but strange
Its gonna be tough for anybody to win the Sky this year.

Mr. Tiger is going to do wonders for that defense!

False. There is some good individual talent on the Portland State team. Sure, the Big Sky may not be as deep as the CAA, but every year there are 1 or 2 teams that are legitimate title contenders. You do see the logo at the top of CS right now, don't you? It's a Big Sky team that won it all. That's got to be worth a
little respect.

When compared to an NDSU fan, he's certainly not a noob.

Dude, in your 36 posts, you've shown more intelligence and fortitude in discussion than JBB and lakesbison have in their 2500+ posts combined. Welcome to the board, and glad you're here. (Although I hate the name 49ers... GO HAWKS!!!

)
EDIT: Nice picture of lakes you posted there.

Apparently there was gold here in 1949. Or maybe Charlotte is celebrating its first FCS title in 2049.
I'll be there in my Subaru 927 QiXiMi

I agree, it's great when a new poster comes in making sense. Nothing worse than a new guy trying to beat his chest right out the gate.

Please remember that Lakes is the crazy drunk uncle in the MVFC family. The one that is always good for a laugh at a party, but the same one you would never trust with your car, kids, or any amount of money.

My pick for Big Sky sleeper is Idaho State. They won't be good enough to win the conference, but they might be good enough to make some noise. A new coach and some good transfers ought to hepl them out in the shortterm.
The problem for Portland State, as mentioned earlier, is the defense. They literally seemed to get worse from game to game last year. Their back 7 is atrocious, and they don't make reads for shit. At times they lacked toughness too, they were marketed as a big pistol team but went away from it after about 2 series against Eastern when they saw our defense could pop. That said, the way Drew Hubel chewed us up through the air a couple of years earlier, maybe they just thought EWU was vulnerable thru the air so figured it was worth a try...

Can we forget about that game yet?

After your guys popped Kavanaugh and broke his hand, the pistol was pretty much out of bullets by then. With Sherritt and the Johnsons clogging the middle and Howland's strength was more in his arm than his legs, best to try to improvise. That said, I was disappointed that we abandoned the pistol so quickly, even with all that happened.

Why did Portland State pull the plug on Hubel ? It was bizarre to see how good he was early in his career and then Portland State just kept demoting him. I realize they've ditched the run-and-shoot for the pistol, but when you have a kid that can sling it like Hubel could, why not find a way to make him fit in the offense?
