I'll throw this one out to you guys... Eastern just had a probable starting DT forced to sit a year by the NCAA after transferring from University of Washington. Here is the quote from the Seattle Times:

"Pulu did not meet NCAA transfer rules because he had not completed a year of residency at EWU. The school's request for a waiver was denied."

Unless this article is incorrect, it seems to indicate that the NCAA is requiring transfers from BCS schools to FCS schools to spend one year enrolled before they can compete. This is totally opposed to what has long been the standard, that drop-down kids can play immediately assuming they meet academic requirements.

Does anyone have any insight? Fortunately, Eastern is pretty deep at DT, so this isn't a massive ordeal, but something seems wrong.

the way the paper worded it is incorrect. there is no requirement to sit out when transfering "down"

I'll make a guess on what happened, because it happened to ISU a couple of years ago with a WR transfer from Illinois.

At the time of the transfer the player must be eligible. I'll guess this guy didn't make grades where he was, so he has some work to do to either get his GPA up or get enough credits to be eligible.

Wasn't this the guy who served six months in prison for assaulting another athlete? The year of residence requirement is real, however, it's often not something you see because there are exemptions to the rule. The exceptions are mainly for a one-time transfer (i.e. a guy who hasn't transferred before) and the guy can use the exemption from the one-year residence if he was in goo academic standing and was academically eligible at the school he transferred from and if the school he transferred from agrees to allow the athlete to use the exemption. The last part is probably more seen as to when a school doesn't release a player from their scholly (Pitt did this to Flacco when Flacco went to UD) - the player has to sit out a whole year then (two full academic periods, not counting summer). But I wouldn't be shocked if the reason this guy will be ineligible at EWU for this season is because he didn't leave Washington in good academic standing, and I'm sure that jail time played into it.

It wasn't an academic issue from what I have heard......so I think it has more to do with the incident the kid had at a party. The one he did 6 months of work-release for. Hopefully he'll be good to go for 2012, but it just sucks he has to sit out this year. NCAA = masters of hypocrisy.

When the NCAA denies a 6th year to a guy who's lost 2 seasons to injury, or when they impose transfer limits on players who graduate early, or when they screw kids who get left behind in a program with sanctions while a coach who committed those infractions leaves for greener pastures, then that's hypocrisy. This kid made his own mistake and is paying for it by sitting out a year - unless he got railroaded in that incident (i.e. he didn't assault the other kid), hard to knock the NCAA here.

I got a question, in regards to roster numbers can a program go over the maximum number of 95 players on one roster? People are talking about former Penn State QB Kevin Newsome possibly transferring to ODU but it's been reported that for the first time in program's history ODU will field a full 95-man roster.I have a feeling if there was any expectation or possibility of him transferring to ODU there would have been a roster spot left open for him....

Wow thats pretty lame. Can I get a link to the article? I'd like to e-mail the guy who wrote it (and many more should too) and see if we can't get some investigative reporting out of the Times on the NCAA regarding this crap.

Yeah, people just swoon over stories of convicted criminals not getting favorable treatment from the NCAA. This is America, I mean, we do love getting criminals out on the playing field as soon as possible.
