Could it be that ODU has it's first former player in the NFL?!
6:17am ET - According to @NFLDraftInsider, the Broncos have agreed to terms with undrafted rookies RB Mario Fannin from Auburn, FB Patrick Hill from Miami, WR Mark Dell from Michigan State, G Bryant Browning from Ohio State Browning has instead agreed to join the Rams, LB Nick Bellore of Central Michigan,
and DE Deron Mayo from Old Dominion, younger brother of Pats LB Jerod. According to @NEPatriotsDraft Denver has also signed WR Marshall Williams from Wake Forest, TE Justin Jones from Toledo, CB James Rogers from Michigan, and DT Colby Whitlock of Texas Tech. Rutgers CB Brandon Bing says he's also agreed to join the Broncos; so does Kansas DB Chris Harris. According to @Ethanhamm, Denver has also added OT Curt Porter out of Jacksonville State.

Not sure how credible of a source this is but this is exciting for ODU.

This is great news for us. Several of you have had players from your teams sign with NFL teams, and Mayo is already behind the eight ball as an undrafted rookie free agent. But for those of us who've waited years for ODU to get football, it's kind of a big deal to see one of our players sign an NFL contract for the first time.

This is very exciting, regardless of Deron's size he is a freakish athlete. He still needs to make the final roster but this is very exicting for ODU.

Official report from the Virginian Pilot website...
Old Dominion University defensive end Deron Mayo has agreed to terms and is expected to sign a free-agent contract today with the Denver Broncos.
The 5-foot-11, 220-pound Mayo, younger brother of New England Patriots linebacker Jerod Mayo, is expected to move to linebacker with the Broncos and hopes to impress the coaching staff with his special teams play.
Although he is small by NFL standards, Mayo said earlier this summer that he hopes people look beyond that and judge him by his production.
"People like (Denver's) Elvis Dumervil and (Pittsburgh's) James Harrison definitely give me hope," Mayo said. "I'm 5-11. I look at people like that and it gives me a lot of motivation. It's all about learning the game. I feel I can rush the passer from the edge. It's just a matter of a coach or a team taking a chance on me, which I know will pay off."

Wait, you mean another player from the overrated, over celebrated 757 area code is headed to the NFL?
Deron and Jerod part of what makes the 757 a recruiting Mecca.

NORFOLK, Va. - Former Old Dominion defensive end Deron Mayo (Hampton, Va.) has signed a free agent contract with the National Football League's Denver Broncos.
Mayo's impact at Old Dominion was immediate from the time he set foot on campus. Choosing to play his final season of collegiate football at ODU after Hofstra disbanded its program, Mayo was named a "Transfer to Watch" by the Sports Network and in a vote by his teammates, was named a Co-Captain, showing their respect for the defensive end with Mayo not even having played a game in the Monarch uniform.
In 2010, Mayo was third on the ODU defense making 70 tackles and made five or more stops in 10 of the Monarchs' 11 games. He led the Monarchs in sacks, was second on the team in tackles for loss, forced a team-leading three fumbles, recorded a team second-best seven QB hurries, and tied for third among teammates with three pass break-ups. As a member of the special teams unit, Mayo blocked two kicks, including a punt at Hampton resulting in a Monarch score.
"We are excited as a football family for Deron Mayo becoming the first Monarch to sign a professional contract," said Monarch head coach Bobby Wilder. "The Denver Broncos are getting a great person that will compete at everything he does on the field and in the meeting room. Deron made an immediate impact with our program as soon as he arrived from Hofstra. Within a few weeks, his new teammates voted him as one of our captains. He was a leader on our team and on campus during his short time at Old Dominion. We wish him well in the NFL."
NFL camps are set to open this week in preparation for the 2011 season that begins in September.
