SoCon inks 3 year football deal with PBS...

...across Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina. New deal will reach 2 million more homes than the deal they had with SPORTSOUTH. SS signed a deal with Conference USA a few months back so SoCon had to find a new home.

This is the greatest news EVER

All kidding aside, you can't really ask for a better opportunity for quality production (as long as we don't get dumped on a sub-channel). I'll take the SoCon in digital HD 5.1 on UNCTV, please and THANK YOU!

2011 Southern Conference Football Telecast Schedule

Date . . . . . . . . . . . . Teams
Oct. 1 . . . . . . Appalachian State at Wofford
Oct. 8 . . . . . . Chattanooga at Georgia Southern
Oct. 15 . . . . . Furman at Georgia Southern
Oct. 22 . . . . . Chattanooga at Elon
Oct. 29 . . . . . Georgia Southern at Appalachian State
Nov. 5 . . . . . . Wofford at Western Carolina
Nov. 12 . . . . . Samford at The Citadel
Nov. 19 . . . . . Appalachian State at Elon

In addition to OTA digital, most cable providers have unencrypted local HD PBS feeds on the digital tier (in addition to their craptastic basic analog service).

Rats! I thought that meant that I would get some football on our local PBS affilliate. Nothing doing!

1. Do people know PBS still exists? Yes or No. If "yes," continue.

2. Do they know what channel number PBS is on? Yes or No. If "yes," continue.

3. Will these people actually turn to that channel? Yes or No. If "yes," continue.

4. Do these PBS viewers care about sports? No or No.

What utter nonsense. PBS isn't NPR.

1. NPR doesn't air science. PBS' Nova is a GREAT show.

2. NPR doesn't air cultural shows outside of possibly Lake Woebegone. PBS has Masterpiece Theater and consistently imports great stuff from BBC.

3. NPR doesn't air kids shows, particularly QUALITY kids shows. PBS has almost always had Sesame Street. They recently resurrected The Electric Company. And some stations still show repeats of the awesome Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood.

4. NPR is almost uniformly liberal. PBS' political shows are ALWAYS balanced, and the Macneill-Lehrer Newshour is balanced, too.

For a while I kept hearing so I decided to actually listen to NPR for a few hours over five days. After listening to the snooze-fest that is NPR, I have no idea where this idea comes from. In fact, I always used to think to myself what the news would be like if it was straight forward reporting, with editorialism being clearly defined as opinions. Well, NPR was the answer to that question, and let me say, it couldn't have been more boring (but that's probably a good thing journalistically speaking). Honestly, I'm not sure where this idea that NPR is liberal emerged.

BTW, I do agree that PBS does actually serve a greater purpose than NPR. Both were created in a time where there weren't a bajillion channels and stations. However unlike radio, you still need to pay for cable or satellite to get the types of shows that PBS broadcasts. PBS does provide a lot of educational, cultural, and news-worthy shows for people that don't have cable/satellite or can't afford it. NPR on the other hand doesn't provide anything more than what you can get on other FM/AM stations, all of which are available as long as you have a radio.

I like NPR. I don't consider it a snooze fest but I will admit that some of the stories are more than a little bland. But if you don't know where the idea that NPR is on the liberal side comes from then you don't pay attention to the news when they quote NPR execs in places other than the radio. Also, you can pick it up in the tone and tenor and the type of stories they do. With that said, like most news sources, if you go in with an understanding of where they are coming from, you can get a lot from their coverage.

Yes. I was flipping through channels a couple of weeks ago and saw a show on the Civil War on PBS. The part I saw showed Richmond getting leveled. It would be nice to see the same thing if they aired CAA football.

Come on SH...the concepts are not different, but comparing radio and TV is apples and oranges. I listen to NPR when the sports station down here goes to commercial break (I can't take 6 minutes of commercials). I've listened to Talk of the Nation and All Things Considered for years...I find them interesting, but it's definitely not for all people. I do agree it has a liberal slant, but I've yet to find any station (radio or TV) that doesn't have a tiny bit of bias. And, like OL FU said, if you know that going in, you can take something away from it.

FWIW, on Saturday's I use my search function on the remote to find football. I don't care if I don't know what the channel is or whether I had known the number. If it's on TV, I will find it. :thumb:

4. Do these PBS viewers care about sports? Yes, but I don't go there for sports usually. Which makes this an odd story.

That should be the equivalent of Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler in the booth calling football.
