Big South DL 2011

Alright Big South fans, time to look at the other side of the trenches...same concept as the OL thread.

I know with the Flames, Asa Chapman (all conference nose tackle) will be leading the way and anchoring the middle. we lose a couple very good ends but we have a couple guys who can step up (like Francis Bah who is converting from the offensive side of the ball and is a real hard hitter)

Stony Brook is returning their entire DL, but they also made some additions during the off season, most notably Maryland transfer Masengo Kabongo who was a four star recruit coming out of high school. They also brought in two juco de's and 4 freshman, one of which coach Priore said was probably the most college ready high school commit he has recruited. So there might be some new faces on what otherwise should be a veteran line. Also, Stony Brook has a new defensive coordinator, Rob Neviaser, who will be working with the defensive line.

always good to have your whole unit return...now as for the transfers, I say what I have always said about transfers, especially from I-A/FBS programs, they either can be really good or REALLY bad...so just because Kabongo comes from an ACC school doesnt mean that he will instantly come in and be first team all conference. Also, as for the stars, they can be highly subjective. a four star recruit on Rivals could be a three star recruit with another service...and add to that a brand new d-coordinator and with that, probably a different defensive philosophy.

So which ODU fan is going to bring up their D-line?

We don't really have much info on him. He transferred in from VA Tech a year ago. He didn't play last year. I'm not sure if that was grades related or what. He originally transferred in on the OL, but has been switched to DL. I don't expect much out of him, so if he does produce it will be a bonus.

Outside of Big Asa, we don't have a lot of experience on the DL. I expect Greg Schuster will play alot at DE. He was Asa's backup at NT his first 2 years and was moved to DE in the spring. Francis Bah, Corey Freeman, and Paco Varol should be in the rotation at DE.

I brought up the stars just to emphasize that there could be some new talent along the defensive line this year. That along with the the new d-coordinator make the DL what I'm most looking forward to seeing in September. Not that they'll be the best, just that there are some intriguing subplots.

I agree with you that how many stars a website attributed to a kid while he was a junior in high school might not mean much three or four years later. It is hard to imagine someone who was once considered the 15th best d-tackle(on ESPN where he was a three star recruit) in his class not making an impact for my Seawolves, but I might be falling into the trap. I disagree that I-A transfers are either really good or really bad. Maybe we hold I-A transfers to a higher standard or its more disappointing when they don't perform exceptionally well but If Kabongo isn't first team all conference, I don't think he's necessarily really bad. There's plenty of middle ground.

All that said, I do think Stony Brook should have a pretty solid unit.

I heard this was the place to go to discuss ODU football.

Our play by play guy weighs over 350 lbs and breaks a toilet seat a week, so we can say we are BIG

And we are below the Mason-Dixon line, so we can say we are SOUTH

Oh, did I mention that we are 4-0 vs your league?

I'd like to discuss our D-line. Then our punter. Then show you our highlights from the 2009 and 2010 seasons.

Thanks for indulging me.

BTW, how the hell is Rocky Creek in the South?

GWU returns several DLs with very significant playing time including 2010 Freshman of the Year DE, Preston Pemasa and we also get back 2009 Freshman Player of the Year DT, Matt Goods [after taking 2010 off]. Jordan Woods returns at DE for his Sr. year and Hudson Smith will also be back at DE. Also, Luke Stein and Big Mo Bryan return at DT. Lots of good experience for the new coaching staff to push here. Our boys should be able to put some serious pressure on BS QBs and give our LBs a chance to make some plays.

Go Runnin' Bulldogs!

I don't know how the first couple days of training camp have gone, but Stony Brook has added DE from Rutgers. Stony Brook has now added two BCS transfers to a DL that returned all their starters. It will be interesting to see how it works out.
