Twin Pick Sixes Lead Red to 28-14 Victory
Ronald Baines and Shane Stagg each returned first-half interceptions for touchdowns, and quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell led his team to a game-clinching 90-yard drive, and the Red defeated the White 28-14 Saturday (April 30) in Eastern Washington University's annual Red-White Game at Roos Field in Cheney, Wash.
The game ended spring practices for the Eagles, who finished the 2010 season 13-2 and won the NCAA Division I title with a come-from-behind 20-19 victory over Delaware last Jan. 7. Eastern opens its 2011 season on Sept. 3 versus Washington of the Pacific 10 Conference.
With big plays being made on both sides of the ball, it was hard to tell if the Eagle defensive units were most successful, or the offense. The defense finished with three interceptions, six sacks and 10 passes broken up.
The two offensive units combined for 507 yards of offense, including 371 through the air and 136 on the ground. Senior running back Darriell Beaumonte (pictured) rushed 11 times for 110 yards for the White, including a 63-yard TD run.

Offense Shines in Final Scrimmage
POCATELLO, Idaho – In Idaho State's final scrimmage of the spring season, the offense shined with Kevin Yost and Kyle Morris throwing a combined 53 passes completing 35 for 288 yards and three touchdowns.
Yost was 14 of 28 for 122 yards while Morris, a sophomore, went 21 of 25 for 166 yards passing.
“Our quarterbacks played just simply outstanding. There was awhile there that I didn't think Kevin (Yost) was going to throw an incompletion,” said Idaho State Head Coach Mike Kramer.
The Bengal offense opened the scrimmage with Yost, a junior transfer, throwing 6 of 7 ending with a four yard passing touchdown by Daniel McSurdy. He was caught all three of his passes in the opening drive for a total of 21 yards. He received 8 of 9 for 67 yards for the day.

Griz offense shines in sunny spring game
Robin Pflugrad gathered his team for one last pep talk before closing the book on the spring practice season.
The second-year Montana Grizzlies coach, in his sarcastic brand of humor, told the squad, "I'm really proud of everyone. Nobody has to walk home. You can all ride the bus."
The Grizzlies wrapped up drills with their annual spring game on a splendid Saturday afternoon at Wendy's Field at Daylis Stadium, and a crowd of better than 5,000 watched as the offense set the pace early before the defense caught up.
The maroon-clad faithful also saw four quarterbacks excel in their own separate ways.

Kirk Powers Blue to Win Over Gold in Sonny Holland Classic
On a day geared to preparing for the 2011 Montana State football season, Cody Kirk was equally at ease breaking tackles and looking back.
“It's always great to have the team win,” Kirk said after helping lead the Blue team to a 26-0 win over the Gold in the Sonny Holland Classic Saturday in sun-splashed Bozeman, and while donning one of the 2010 Big Sky Conference Championship rings doled out to MSU players after the scrimmage. “It's even better to get this ring.”
If Kirk was a big part of MSU's championship season last fall, earning mention as the team's top special teams player, he showed Saturday he is preparing to step into a role as a scrimmage player. The sophomore running back gained 94 yards on 10 carries Saturday, scoring twice. He also caught a pass for 15 yards.
“I thought Cody Kirk was special,” said MSU coach Rob Ash, “I really did. He saw the holes well, he ran with power, he broke tackles, made some guys miss. I think he took a real step forward today. He's quicker than he was a year ago, and that showed up today.”

Running Back Bauman Highlights Spring Game
FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. – Rising sophomore Zach Bauman, a former Chandler Hamilton standout, had 150 yards of total offense to highlight Northern Arizona's annual Blue-Gold Spring Game held at the Sinagua Football Field on Saturday afternoon.
"Zach looks really good," said Head Coach Jerome Souers. "He has grown more confident with the new offensive line he has in front of him. They showed they are going to be good."
Bauman, who rushed for 1,059 yards in 2010 and set the school freshman rushing mark while recording the 14th 1,000-yard season in school history, had 98 yards on the ground with three receptions for 52 yards to lead the offense.

Blue holds on for 21-20 win over white
GREELEY, Colo. – The white team scored two touchdowns in the first half and one in the second half, while the blue team did the opposite, getting to the endzone once in the first and twice in the second half at the Battle of the Bears Blue & Gold Spring Game. The white team went for the two-point conversion with less than a minute to play and the ball sailed long, giving blue the 21-20 win.
“I thought the kids showed up for the last spring practice,” said Head Coach Earnest Collins Jr. “For the fans it’s a game, but for us it’s just the last practice. The kids did well. It was difficult for us to run a full offense and full defense since we split the teams. I thought the spring went well, we didn’t get anyone hurt too badly.”
The Bears defense stepped up for 13 total sacks, led by senior-to-be VJ Holmes with 4.0 for the white team, while redshirt freshman Sawyere Monson had 3.0 for the blue squad. The defense also stepped up with four interceptions, including one by junior AJ Moosa for a 45-yard return.
“Defensively, we have more pieces to fill,” said Collins. “Defense is playing well and I don’t have any big concerns about Coach Shay and the defense. We’ll keep chomping at the bit but we’ll be good to go.”

Spring Game Shows Young Players, Improved Defense
The Portland State offense defeated the defense, 44-32, in the annual spring game at Lincoln High School on Saturday. A modified scoring format in which the offense scored by traditional methods and first downs, and the defense scored by forced series stops and turnovers, was used.
The Viking offense ran 67 plays, totaling 327 yards. The offense scored three touchdowns and one field goal, totaling 25 points on actually scoring plays. Defensively, the Vikings forced two fumbles and six three-and-out series. They also had eight tackles for loss, three sacks and four pass breakups.
Quarterback Connor Kavanaugh played just two series in the game at his old high school field. He completed 3-5 passes for 43 yards. He had one 14-yard run as well.
The game's scoring was opened with a 53-yard field goal by Zach Brown on the first series, led by Kavanaugh.

TURNOVERS PLAGUE OFFENSE IN GREEN-GOLD GAME
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento State football team concluded its spring practice season with the annual Green-Gold Game on Saturday morning at Hornet Stadium. The game was highlighted by the defense which created four turnovers and limited the offense to one touchdown and field goal in 50 plays.
The defense grabbed the upper-hand early on, forcing a three-and-out in the opening drive and then creating turnovers in consecutive drives. Safety Joe Larche gathered in a loose ball off of a Tommy Edwards fumble for the first, while Osagie Odiase intercepted Dominic Carmazzi and returned the ball 64-yards down the sideline before being stopped at the 4-yard line.
Edwards got the offense on the board with a 7-play, 35-yard drive which resulted in a 24-yard field goal from Jason Diniz. The drive featured a 16-yard run from Curtis Shaw and a 25-yard completion to Kenonte Howard but stalled inside the 10.
The defense took momentum back with a stop of Stephen Tezanos-Pinto on 4th-and-1 before the offense bounced back with its first touchdown. Garrett Safron opened with a 38-yard pass to John Hendershott which took the ball down to the 7-yard line. Safron then rushed up the middle on the next play for the score.

Quarterbacks Lead Wildcats in Spring Football Game
The Weber State football team completed the 2011 spring camp with an exciting spring game Saturday at the WSU practice field.
WSU's two quarterbacks have performed well all spring and Saturday was no exception. Sophomore Jordan Adamczyk threw five touchdown passes to lead the White team to a 32-26 victory over the Purple team in an offensive showdown.
Adamczyk finished the day completing 24-31 passes for 289 yards and the five touchdowns. On the Purple side junior quarterback Mike Hoke finished the day 24-37 for 273 yards and one touchdown pass, along with rushing for another TD.
"We have two quarterbacks that can play and they both performed well today and took control of their teams," said WSU head coach Ron McBride. "I was very pleased with our team today. We have a lot of guys that made some plays. I liked their attitude and it was good for them to be in a game situation. Now we just have to work hard over the summer and get ready to go in the fall."
