Stetson adds Non-Schollie Football, starting in 2013

After tonight's unanimous DeLand city commision vote to go ahead with the proposed renovations at Spec Martin Stadium and partnership with Stetson, the university has announced the addition of football and is starting the process to join the prestigious Pioneer Football League with the first game in fall 2013. Long ago considered a pigskin powerhouse in Florida, Stetson has not had a football team since the 1956 season.
A new NCAA Division I program in Women's Lacrosse - which has become wildly popular since it started a year ago as a club sport at Stetson - will also be added at the same time.
The university currently has 15 intercollegiate sports, with most of those played in the Atlantic Sun Conference.
The approved proposal calls for the city to finance capital improvement needs for the stadium in return for an annual rental fee from Stetson and an agreement to share revenue from sponsorships and advertising, as well as a commission on concessions and parking. Stetson has a similar agreement with the city for use of Melching Field at Conrad Park for baseball.

Adding Stetson and Mercer in 2013 puts the Pioneer up to 12 teams, and creates a nice Southeastern Division:
Southeast Division
Stetson (Florida)
Jacksonville (Florida)
Mercer (Georgia)
Campbell (NC)
Davidson (NC)
Midwest Division
Drake (IA)
Butler (IN)
Valporaiso (IN)
Morehead State (KY)
Dayton (OH)
And two outliers:
Marist (NY)
San Diego (CA)

I think that Marist should replace Fordham in the Patriot. Kennesaw St. is adding scholly football right? If yes, I see an all sports invite to the Big South in their future

Stetson participated in football from 1901 until 1956 achieving an all-time record of 155–127–27
BTW, they really are the Stetson Hatters?

"DeLand University's name was changed in 1889 to honor hat manufacturer John B. Stetson, a benefactor of the university, who served with town founder Henry A. DeLand and others as a founding trustee of the university."

Miami started playing FB in 1927, FSU not until 1947. So for a lot of those years, Stetson probably was a "powerhouse". FWIW, Stetson's all-time record against UF, FSU and Miami is 1-19.

Hen, you know there wasn't much college football in Florida at that time. Not hard to be a powerhouse without many challenges

How could anyone pass up this gem, from the article:
"is starting the process to join the prestigious Pioneer Football League with the first game in fall 2013."
LOL.
Glad to see another startup, but it's better to be honest about the situation.

It is the most prestigious non-schollie D-I football league in the land!!
(and, most of the schools are top-notch, academically, Butler excepted)

Yeah, they would have joined the Ivy League, if it only had a little more prestige.

Ahhh, I think I needed to read the emphasis on "IN" instead of "powerhouse".

As opposed to what??? Read some history before you start ripping a great American and a great university. The only thing fucking embarrassing is your fucking ignorance.
Stetson played some pretty good baseball under Pete Dunn (Chipper's dad used to be an assistant there) and had a solid hoops program under Glenn Wilkes from the late 50's through late 80's. My uncle played and coached there and my cousin played there. I attended Coach Wilkes' camps and worked at them during my college years. Coach Wilkes remains a great friend to me and my family to this day.
With that being said, I am very surprised that they are restarting football. As wealthy as the school is it doesn't really go out of its way to fund athletics so I can't ever (and I've been around that athletics program my whole life) see them funding football scholarships.
Nevertheless, best of luck to them. It is a class university.

I'm surprised dback hasn't banned his ass. All of his cap lock threads belong on the smack board anyway. He thinks he's D1B (like that's a good thing) but lacks the vocabulary of D1B. D1B is our board Dick, do we need 2?
