Letter to Spartanburg paper

This letter was in the Spartanburg morning paper:
I was dressed in my Wofford gear, and from the moment I got out of my car my two children and I were cussed at from the Georgia Southern "elite". The "fun" continued once inside the stadium as their fans made it a point to shout deragatory comments at the Wofford faithful. One of them even spat on my eight year old daughter for saying "Go Terriers". As the game progressed, I watched eight of them get escorted out of Gibbs Stadium...one of them was talking junk to an officer and resisting him. I then noticed some dissension in the ranks as the Terriers began to stage a comeback. They have turned on themselves, I thought, and have begun fighting amongst themselves, which led to two more of their finest being ejected. Ans all this "fun" was happening on the WOFFORD side of the stands...I can't even image what the visitors' side must have been like! The game was a clash between two great Southern Conference teams and unfortunately we came up short. The game, however, was overshadowded by the events in the stands. GSU fans told me that they were making Gibbs stadium their house since the NCAA wouldn't let them host. If that resembled their house in Statesboro, it must be the biggest trailer in the park.
Sincerely,
Tony Ravan
Wow, just wow...I was not at the game as I had to work, but this sounds bad! I guess some people are just animals and have not evolved past the Neanderthal stage. I await the inevitable defense (or complete denial) of these actions by a select few of our message board bretheren. My only question is why would Mr. Ravan take time out to write such a letter if he was not telling the truth and was not completely appalled by what he went through? It sounds somewhat like a prison yard description! I have also read accounts of GSU fans openly drinking alcoholic beverages inside the stands. We are definitely going to need more cops for the next GSU visit to Wofford.
Look, I have no personal beef with the GSU team...they are great and they earned their victory. And I know that not all of their fans are bad...I'm sure some, in fact most, GSU folks are as appalled as Wofford is at some of these actions. But it is what it is...security at games where rough crowds are anticipated is going to HAVE to be stepped up even more!

Sorry, but I find that hard to believe. If someone spat on my 8 year old daughter it would not pass. Lacking a physical confrontation, he would have been arrested for assault.
This flys in the face of our experience with GSU fans in Williamsburg.

This miniscule sample of GSU faithful proves beyond a doubt that all GSU fans are thugs and hoodlums who spit on small children and eat small woodland creatures raw.

I don't know, dude...it's just what he said. Like I said, I was not there.
But here's the thing...if you try to fight him, you have not only reduced yourself to his level, but you might get ganged up on and put into the hospital (or even killed). And if you go to security, he will deny doing it...and it's you and your kid's word against his. Fortunately, I have always insisted on protection and have not made any kids so I don't have to worry about this kind of thing.

Didn't you read the part where I said that some, in fact most GSU fans would not be happy with these actions? )Or did you convienently skip over that part so you could bash me?

It's illegal in Montana too, but people do it "openly". And somehow, they manage to treat the fans from other teams with respect and kindness. Quit blaming it on alcohol and just realize you live in an area full of mouth-breathing unedumacated rednecks.

Yes, but unfortunately Spartanburg, SC does not support Wofford like it should.

Yes.
No matter your take, if you bring up something like this, be prepared to be labeled a baby.

I will give you this...I went up to Montana to visit my half sister and see the game when Wofford played up there in the playoffs, and you guys were GREAT! Everyone was nice to me...pure class all the way! I just wish GSU could be more like you. And yes, I agree, we DO have to many rednecks around here!

As anybody who knows me or any of the other "Red Flag Gang" at the GSU games knows I spit on small children as habit, with spit from snuff too!!! Also, I trip old people who use canes to walk and cuss out anybody I make eye contact with. And I'm damned proud of it too!!!!!
I think it is great when we can pick out a handful of drunks from thousands of people and brand those thousands of people as "neanderthals" based on the behavior of that handful.
But of course we know the fine people of Wofford are above any sort of classless behavior, especially those on the sidelines dressed in Wofford gear serving in an official capacity with the football program who threw the bird to the GSU students in Paulson earlier this year...
In this day of cell phone cameras I don't believe a word of that letter short of confirmation from law enforcement or pictures. Sounds more like a sore loser to me.

You might be right...but why do I here so many horror stories about GSU from Wofford and other SoCon schools? Are they ALL false? Just food for thought.

No doubt, but going to many college football games, at all levels in multiple different geographical locations/conferences etc... I don't think I've been to a single game where I haven't seen someone pull out at least a pocket flask to spice up their soda in the stands. But I wouldn't be shocked about drinking in the stands. Just my experience though.

Don't you have some live chipmunks and baby squirrels to go nibble on, you neanderthal? I bet you don't have any problem keeping the chew in your mouth while you eat though. Impressive....

It's because you're a Wofford alum and have delicate sensibilities.
I went to the W&M - GSU game with a group of William and Mary alums. After the game all they could talk about was how horrible the GSU fans were. I was with them all day... they didn't see or hear anything I didn't... and the GSU fans were perfectly normal. Yes, it must suck to walk out of your stadium with the GSU contingent chanting "overrated" at you. Yes, it would suck to sit on your hands all game while the GSU contingent is standing, cheering, and loud all game. But, I didn't see anything horrific. In their case... and I'd imagine in the case of the letter writer... it's sour grapes.

How am I contradicting? The Montana fans WERE great when I went out west...they bought me beers in bars, and told me about the best places to "get some action".

And I was just pointing out that the fellow missed the part where I said I don't have a beef with GSU...and might have missed it purposely to better his argument against me...that doen't make me think he's a monster though. It is two totally different things, my trip to Montana and his reaction to my post.
Contradict much?
