Sometime this week, the presidents of the universities that compete in the Patriot League will emerge from an undisclosed location and announce whether its football teams will be allowed to offer scholarships. At the heart of the discussion will be a couple of age-old collegiate athletic questions: How big-time do Lafayette and Lehigh and their fellow league members want to become? And how much are they willing to pay for it?

Could change the whole makeup of Northeast FCS.

The Patriot League Council of Presidents tabled a decision to amend its current need-based financial aid system for football, it was announced following the Council of Presidents meeting on Tuesday. "Following extensive discussions at their meetings this week, the Patriot League Council of Presidents elected to table a decision to adjust the current need-limited model of financial aid for two years pending additional deliberations related to the League's strategic direction," the Council of Presidents announced in a joint statement

Stinks for the PL teams, great for all of the rest of us in the Northeast FCS world.

Patriot schools with scholarships would have been very difficult to recruit against.

And the PL being a scholarship league would be a real player in the moving & shaking of the next realignment. As is, they better hope they enjoy their current setup.

So will the NEC get Fordham or will the CAA?

I guess the Big South could bring in a partner for SBU, too…

schollies in the patriot league would literally save the FCS. And save D-1 FCS football in new england.

Doubt we'd take Holy Cross. They seem to be firmly in the "no scholarship camp. Lehigh and Colgate are the best targets. Fordham's already a candidate, as they are in limbo with an affiliation but no chance for an AQ.

I would guess that the PL presidents who favor scholarship football saw the handwriting on the wall, and no one called for the question. Leaves Fordham out in the cold, and Lehigh and Colgate with their backs to the wall. Would also seem obvious that Lehigh and Colgate were not likely to affirm a commitment to the current setup. Will be interesting to see what those three do. Two years is a long time to wait in the current environment of change. CAA should offer the three a package deal.

Fordham isn't coming to the NEC. The Rams want to offer 63 scholarships, the NEC will only allow 40. The other Rams (URI) agreed to the 40 scholarship limit and there is no reason to think the NEC will change this policy just to attract Fordham.

I aslo don't think the CAA is in need of a football affilate, despite the loss of URI and possibly even UMass. It is cetainly possible, but I don't think the CAA is in the position to make that commitment yet, with somany things still possible (GMU/VCU football? UNH/Maine leave the league? etc.). The CAA will ALWAYS be in a position to add a member if needed, so there is no reason for them to jump and take Fordham just beacuse the PL voted to do nothing and put FU's membership in limbo.

IMO - Fordham is now much more likely to join the Big South. The BS allows 63 scholarships, has just 7 teams, and already has a "Northern affiliate" from NY in the league - Stony Brook. In fact, I wouldn't be suprised to hear the rumors from the conference/school by soon. Fordham has just 2 years left (2011 & 2012) on its "scheduling agreement" with the PL.
