2010 All-Great West Football Team Announced
Southern Utah has improved its overall football record in each of the last three seasons, going from zero wins in 2007 to four wins in 2008, five in 2009 and six this year for the program’s first winning season since 2004 and its first outright championship in school history. Two individuals who played a big part in the Thunderbird resurgence were rewarded with major awards as the 2010 Great West all-conference teams and Players of the Year were named today. Head coach Ed Lamb was voted Great West Coach of the Year and wide receiver Tysson Poots Offensive Player of the Year in voting of the league’s coaches.
Other major award winners were Marty Mohamed from Cal Poly as Defensive Player of the Year, Randy Wright of UC Davis as Rookie of the Year and punter Cole Zwiefelhofer from South Dakota as Special Teams Player of the Year,.
Poots, a 6-3 senior from Las Vegas, Nev., will go down as one of the top wide receivers in the Great West as he finished the 2010 regular season ranked fourth in the FCS ranks in both receptions per game (7.73) and receiving yards per game (118.82) while hauling in 11 touchdown passes. Among active FCS players after the regular season, Poots ranks first in catches (282), receiving yards (3,975) and receiving TDs (44) by wide margins in all three categories.
“Tysson Poots represents everything that a coach could ask for in a player - top-notch student, excellent leadership skills as team captain, tireless off-season worker and a fierce competitor,” said Lamb. “I’m grateful that the Great West Confer¬ence football coaches would consider Tysson deserving of such a prestigious award.”
Mohamed, a senior from Brawley, Calif., led Cal Poly with 88 tackles, 41 of those solo, had 3 interceptions and one sack, and was named Great West Defensive Player of the Week on two occasions, including a 15-tackle, one interception game in Cal Poly’s win over then No. 1 Montana on Sept. 11. He is the fourth Mustang to win the league’s top defensive honor as the previous three were all named Buchanan Award winners - Jordan Beck, Chris Gocong and Ryan Shotwell.
Zwiefelhofer, a sophomore from Chipewa Falls, Minn., averaged 43.21 yards per punt, which ranked him 6th nationally af¬ter regular season play, and was named Player of the Week in the Great West four times this season, most of any player in any category. He had a long of 60 yards and 18 of his 53 punts came to rest inside the opponents’ 20 yard line and just six punts resulted in touchbacks.
Wright, a 6-3, 185-pounder from Santa Rosa, Calif., who was thrust into the starting quarterback role when returning starter Greg Denham decided to forgo his senior year, completed 205 of 318 passes (58.9 percent) for 2,432 yards and 17 touchdowns in helping UC Davis to a 6-5 record and a second place finish in the Great West. He was named Great West Offensive Player of the Week the last two weeks of the season after wins vs. rivals Cal Poly and Sacramento State.
Lamb was named Great West Coach of the Year for the first time as he led the Thunderbirds to their first winning season since 2004 and the first outright Great West title. The third-year head coach was named a finalist for the prestigious Eddie Robinson Award, given annually to the top coach in the FCS ranks.
Counting Poots, there were four individuals who were named first-team all-conference for the third times in their careers - LB Akeem Anifowoshe from Southern Utah, DB Asa Jackson from Cal Poly and TE Dean Rogers from UC Davis. There were five others who repeated as first-team members - OT Mark Tos and K Sean Kelley from UC Davis, South Dakota RB Chris Ganious, DB Colin Pretlow from Southern Utah and North Dakota LB Ryan Kasowski.
