1. QB Jeremy Moses, Stephen F. Austin, Sr.- 268-440, 3169 yds, 31 TD, 4 INT, 60.9%, 142.8 pass eff., 316.9 yds/gm, 13 carries, -74 yds in 10 games.

His career, records broken, and reputation look like they could earn him this year’s Payton. He now has over 30 touchdowns and has thrown for a whopping 3100 yards. This is still not a definite as anyone in my top five could possibly vault to number one next week with a big performance.

2. RB Taiwan Jones, Eastern Washington, Jr.- 159 carries, 1236 yds, 11 TD, 7.8ypc, 137.3 yds/gm, 17 catches, 287 yds, 16.9ypc, 2 TD, 3 PR, 28 yds, 9.3avg, 13 KR, 255 yds, 19.6avg in 9 games.

Jones would win this award if he had not been hurt. I’m convinced of it. When healthy he is dominant week in and week out. He is the most explosive back I have seen this year. He is versatile as he can return kicks, does a good job of receiving out of the backfield, and he can carry the load 20-25 times a game.

3. OT Ben Ijalana, Villanova, Sr.

Ijalana won’t finish this high but he should. He has been dominant all season long and is the sole reason directors and GMs have come in to Villanova. He will end his career as a three-time first-team All-CAA selection and two-time first-team All-American. Ijalana is the best offensive lineman I have seen in FCS in 10 years.

4. RB Nate Eachus, Colgate, Jr.- 287 carries, 1667 yds, 19 TD, 5.8ypc, 166.7 yds/gm, 14 catches, 132 yds, 9.4ypc in 10 games.

Eachus has been impressive all season long leading the nation in rushing and will likely surpass 20 rushing touchdowns, a rare feat, this week.

5. RB Henry Harris, Southeast Missouri State, Sr.- 285 carries, 1627 yds, 17 TD, 5.7ypc, 147.9 yds/gm, 18 catches, 182 yds, 10.1ypc, 1 TD in 11 games.

Harris has not gotten the respect he deserves. While he is not big he is fast, quick, and explosive. He is the sole reason SEMO is ranked in the top 10 because without him this offense would not be nearly as effective.

Holmes almost solidified this award over the last two weeks and should walk away with it if he has another huge week coming up. He makes plays in the run and pass game and is a violent hitter feared by CAA quarterbacks.

2. LB J.C. Sherritt, Eastern Washington, Sr.- 117 TT, 10 TFL, 2.5 sacks, 3 INT, 3 PBU, 2 QBH, 1 FF in 10 games.

Sherritt has led EWU to a national ranking of third and leads the team in tackles. He brings a name reputation and has been a playmaker in the run and pass game.

3. DT Kenrick Ellis, Hampton, Sr.- 90 TT, 14 TFL, 2 sacks, 4 QBH, 2 FR, 1 FF in 9 games.

While the MEAC is not a great league Ellis is the most physically imposing player in FCS and would be first on the list if not for the league and lack of gaudy sack numbers. If not for his off field issues he would be a likely second or third round draft choice in the spring.

4. LB Matt Evans, New Hampshire, Soph.- 128 TT, 8 TFL, 3 sacks, 1 INT, 1 PBU, 1 QBH, 2 FR, 2 FF in 10 games.

Evans has been hot the last few weeks. He is tied for second nationally in tackles per game (12.80) and he has made plays picking off passes and wreaking havoc in the backfield. His play has set him up nicely to become a front runner for the 2011 award.

5. DT Brent Russell, Georgia Southern, Soph.- 49 TT, 14.5 TFL, 6 sacks, 2 PBU, 2 QBH, 1 FR in 10 games.

Russell not only earned a spot in the top 20 but has vaulted into my top five with his dominating performances the last two weeks. He is a major part of the most impressive defensive tackle group I have seen in some time in FCS.

He is 17th in the FCS in passing effiency...a head of Moses from SFA.
He leads the conference in rushing yards, and is putting up over 6 yards per carry.
The teams we face now spend 3/4 of the week planning just for Rennie.



He has 1210 yards rushing with 14 rushing touch downs
86-151 passing with 8TDs for 1440 yards, and eff of 143

That is over 2600 yards of offense from him alone. From the NCAA stats website he is 4th in the nation in yards per play he is invovled in, something like 14th in the naiton in total offense...oh and he has done that with upwards of 30-60 less plays than the players a head of him.



The fact he isn't even on a watch list is a joke.

DE Coulter Boyer, North Dakota Sate, Jr.- 45 TT, 10 TFL, 7 sacks, 4 PBU, 10 QBH, 3 FR, 3 FF in 10 games.

Coulter should have 8 sacks and an INT returned for a TD. The rest of the numbers are correct though.

Rennie has 8 INT's also. He's far from dominant.

Rennie's INT's all came early in the season when he was splitting time in a terrible QB situation and wasn't able to get comfortable. Look at his stats since he took complete control of the team vs. the first 5 games of the season.

Rennie completely changes the game.

I agree that Rennie should at least be on that list at this point. By no means is he an excellent QB, but at this point, you simply cannot ignore the numbers that he has put up.

He has comparable/better numbers than many players on that list. His rushing stats are almost unheard of for a QB. Rennie deserves to at least be "in the mix".

I think you jumped off the DeAndre Presley wagon prematurely.

Here are the numbers for his first 5 games, during which time he was splitting time and was never really allowed to "open his passing ability up" because of the play calls....if you could see the games you'd know exactly what I was talking about...compared to the last 5 games he has played.

The interceptions are still there, and that is a problem but it has been greatly mitigated thanks to the offensive style we run now with him comared to trying to fit two QB's into an odd system that tried to incorporate both

They didn't all come early in the season. He's been consistent in throwing 1 a game pretty much. He's also been sacked 23 times. Not really indicative of him completely but it's still there.

They didn't all come early in the season. He's been consistent in throwing 1 a game pretty much. He's also been sacked 23 times. Not really indicative of him completely but it's still there.

The sack number I don't completely believe.


A lot of times it's hard to tell if the play is a pass or run, and we are starting 5 new offensive lineman this year. To put those sacks on Rennie isn't fair at all.

I'm aware that is the official number in box scores, but like I've said with the offense we have run this year there are times where I can't tell if it is a pass that broke down and Rennie had to scramble or if it was a draw.

Sounds odd because a draw only delays a split second or so, but we have run plays that were draws the entire way but Rennie waited a solid second or two before taking off.

If the QB is tackled for a loss, isn't it always considered a sack? regardless if it supposed to be a passing play or a rushing play

I was mistaken. According to the statisticians manual, there must be "an apparent attempt to pass" for it to be a sack.

Definitely a tough call in regards to an offensive scheme like UNI's, since on plays with a passing option, more than 50% of the time Rennie isn't going to make any attempt to pass.

For the genius that started this thread.... Steve Valentino just won his 3rd PFL player of the week award.... Do you even know how many weeks JU's QB has won? My guess is that the PFL folks know more about the best players in the league than you ever will....

Ronnie Fouch had a pretty solid game with 4 passing touchdowns 290 yards and also 31 yards rushing...Fouch also punted regularly for the Sycamores and placed three inside the 20...reason why he isn't on anyone's lists for the Payton award? The guy has thrown 24 touchdown passes this season and has led Indiana State to their first winning season in 13 years... Just a question...I know in the past he was on the payton watch list....

I missed the INT being returned for a touchdown but according to the MVFC website he is credited with 7 sacks.

I don't go to team websites but simply check the league websites so it is possible the UNI website is off by a number in a couple places.

His numbers were good this past weekend but they weren't off the charts. Part of the reason I took him out of the top five is the play of Harris, Jones, and the fact I added Ijalana. Ijalana has been dominant my man. To put a lineman in your top five they have to be above and beyond everyone else each week and he has been doing that. I have waited longer on him than any other player because we all know what a statement it is for a lineman to be mentioned that high for the Payton. McGregor has better numbers across the board as you mention. I did an even more thorough check of the numbers between the two comparing them and I can't justify having Valentino over McGregor. Valentino is a good player but his numbers aren't quite as good and his team is ranked lower than McGregor's, which believe it or not might hurt in this situation.
