He does have another year on his contract, but this move was obvious. Only surprise is that they didn't wait a week to announce it.

Personally i think this should somewhat help a program that lately has been struggling mightily. Coming from how badly SUU was playing a few years ago i can attest to the feelings of all the Bengal fans and players out there. Hopefully they will get a coach that can bring back if not winning, substantial improvement to a program that has been needing it for years. Now in my observations (dont know if they are merit or not) ISU always seems to be lacking skill when in comparison to other Big Sky teams, maybe they should get a coach with running an offense with ties to either a triple option or maybe delaware wing-t to help balance the playing field a little.

They didn't lack skill under Larry Lewis, though they couldn't help but commit a bazillion personal fouls every game.
Unfortunately for ISU, the problems don't end with the coaching staff. Their Faculty Senate recently decided to hold a no-confidence vote on school president Arthur Vailas next month.

Wow, that's rough. But maybe it is time to hit the reset button at ISU.

Idaho State and Western Carolina need only look to Indiana State for inspiration. It can happen! From one cat to another ISU fans, best of luck righting your ship.

You're competing with Boise, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, MSU, Weber, and EWU for in state recruits, and trying to convince 18 year old kids from Cali to come to small town Pocatello in cold, Mormon influenced Southern Idaho, oh - and your facilities and recent history are poor. I'm guessing Z is a good coach (success at CWU, and most of EWU's staff Played or coached under him) in a really bad situation.
Also, how in the he'll does any cash strapped state afford a contract buy out for a school with low athletics expectations anyway?

Don't forget Utah State and Utah. They recruit the area as well. And the Mormon kids all have one foot in at BYU as well (all the good ones anyway). Almost an oversaturated recruiting area, given the population.

Thoughts from those close to the situation think that Zamberlin's failure was sewn early in his tenure. He lost most of his first two recruiting classes... the usual: grades, returning home, poor fit, etc. These early failures led to losing red-shirt seasons and finally severe APR penalties, reduced practice time (just 4 days a week) and scholarships reductions. I think ISU is working with around 57 right now.
Lack of depth has been coupled with an inability to secure decent coordinators; many stayed behind at CWU and those that followed Z to ISU were promoted.

Similar to what happened at Washington State. Of the 50 some kids from Bill Doba's final two recruiting classes, none of them remained by Wulff's second year. Believe it or not, WSU has shown some improvement this year and just won their first Pac 10 game in nearly two years - and on the road.
You've got to give a coach in this situation at least a graduating class and because of the loss of scholarships, probably more.

ISU has such a difficult situation to try to win with, but you still have to ask for improvement on occasion. No surprise here.

Good luck on the new hire ISU. Hopefully they can right the ship and become competitive again.

No, they need to blow that entire hangar up and build a real stadium in the hole left behind.

Thank god, every game I have been to in that place there has been a season ending and nasty looking injury. Last year the ISU tight end got his leg broke right in front of me and it was not pretty, felt really bad for him. The time before that was one of our receivers and it hurt us in the playoffs. Time for that nasty stuff to go away.

That's been ISU recent history. I wouldn't put it past them, especially with the extra motivation to send Zamberlin out a winner.
Not a done deal, mind you. But something that's entirely within the realm of possibility, particularly if the Eags look past them to the playoffs. Even if the Eags do win, a haphazard performance could cost them a seed. Weirder things have happened.

I see SE's bread-and-butter bully response to nay-sayers is to demand a wager, which he'll likely welch on as soon as he loses.
Besides, nobody's said ISU over EWU is a done deal. We're only mentioning that ISU has a recent habit of winning the last game of the season, so the possibility has to be at least considered.
As everyone knows, a loss or even a poor win over a crap team like ISU would cost EWU big time. Again, there's no guarantee that such will happen, but all heck will break loose if it does.
