good opportunity to practice.
if ya screw it up, it won't hurt you at all.

or evidently it wasn't 50-9 when the onside kick was taken.
so *shrug* :coffee:

Yeah, I misread someone's post. Nothing wrong with sneaking an onsides to start the game.

There may be some room for criticism here guys. First, practice has nothing to do with it since we do it a lot. Second, we did it three times during this game.
The first was on the opening kickoff. The idea was to not let a bad team get any momentum/confidence.
The second time was after we took a 14-0 lead midway through the first quarter. We recovered it but someone was offsides.
The third was sometime after that in the second quarter. The score was at least 21-0 then, but it could have been 28-0. Once again we recovered it but were offsides and had to re-kick.

After one series for each offense, it was clear that Savannah St. did not have the personnel to stay in this game.

So go ahead an pile on. We certainly wondered what the heck we were doing. After all, we were hoping for our first shutout and did not want to give them good field position if the onsides kick failed.

Didn't ODU successfully do that to us on the first kickoff?

We have done this so many times I can't keep track anymore. But I would say yes.
Other than an onside kick out of desperation at the end of a game, we have recovered every single one. If I had to guess, I would say it is at least 10. Probably closer to 15.
Last year it was only the dribbler straight up the middle of the field. This year we added the lob over the front line towards the sideline.

Teams are just not watching enough film. If they watch only one or two games in preparation for us, they might see one onside kick and think it is an anomaly. Next thing you know, the coach says "Oh Crap" while on the sidelines.

Holy crap Savannah State is horrible. Put them up against Valpo and I think we'd have ourselves one helluva close game. We put up 50 against them in the first half, and if Coach Wilder really wanted to, I'm 100% sure that we could've put up at least 30+ more points with the second and third stringers that played in the second half. It's actually a bit funny that SSU scored 9 against our starting defense in the first half and couldn't put up anything in the second half against our back-ups.

SSU showed absolutely no heart, no emotions, nor anything. Not during warm-ups, not during half-time, not when they actually scored, not on the bench. It's like they just came in, played "football," and left. Kinda feel really bad for that whole team, and I'm glad Wilder didn't destroy them in the second half (even though it meant for a boooooooooooring game). Gotta feel bad for the future of the MEAC too, as if they aren't bad enough now. SSU even had the MEAC patch on their jersey.

BTW, the final was 57-9. End of 1st half it was 50-9.

You could dedicate an entire thread to the problems that are in Savannah State football. Hopefully things get better down there for them soon :/
