In a season filled with disappointments, the Jaguars remain the nation’s most penalized team, and it’s by a huge margin. That’s much of the reason that Southern is stumbling along with six losses in its last seven games, with its only win in that streak over winless and hapless Mississippi Valley State.

The Jags have been hit with 940 yards in penalties this year, an average of 117.5 yards per game and the most among any American college football team in any division.

The next-highest Division I total is 783 penalty yards (97.9 per game) called on Bethune-Cookman this season. In other words, out of 237 Division I teams, in both the FBS and FCS, Southern is the national leader in penalties by an amazing 157 yards – almost 20 yards per game – over everyone else.

Just for the record, Valpo has the fewest penalties and penalty yards per game... that's not working out well for them, either.

it's a combo of undisciplined play and horrible officiating. in southern's case playing 20+ freshmen will lead to lots of dumb drive killing penalties. I can't speak for the MEAC but in the SWAC home cooking is pretty brutal at times.
