Does anyone know if UND will be able to keep thier nickname now that they are going to the Big Sky or are they still being forced to change it?

Do they have any ideas of when they have to come up with a new one?

There's a law-suit going on between UND and the NCAA. The premise of UND's argument is that there are other institutions in the NCAA with american indian nicknames/mascots............I.E. FSU Seminoles, that have not had to change their names. Kinda makes sense. I think UND has 3 years to get approval from the tribes in the Dakotas to continue to use the Sioux name. If they do, then they won't be changing their name.

The Ute's of Utah had to get Tribal approval too.

New guys in the Army were called "FNG".

The nickname is gone. Saturday is the last home game using the name. This is the last season. They are in the phase out part now. Im not sure how long that will last, but the lawsuit gave them 3 yrs and then, as I understand it, the State intervened and gave them until yesterday. In the mean time, when it became apparent even to UND that they had long since ruined any chance with the Tribes, they announced an end to the nickname.

There was a huge struggle this summer with petitions and votes with one of the Tribes even expressing a majority opinion that the nickname was ok. Unfortunately for UND the vote wasnt binding on the Tribe and they never issued a letter granting permission to UND to use the name. That really got under their skin because they felt democracy had been ignored.

The big problem was the constant running down of the Tribes by the UND community over the nickname they claimed they used to honor the Tribes. There was just too much racial and vindictive behavior aimed toward the Tribes to thwart the good things many of the UND community thought they were doing.

Its a shame really. Indeed.

UND was able to get a vote on the Spirit Lake reservation which turned out to at 66% in favor of the name. The Standing Rock tribal council would never allow the vote there to occur. Since the settlement with the NCAA required approval of both tribes, the name is being retired.

From what I understand they have no plans on having a nickname they want to be know as just North Dakota. Since they can no longer be called the Sioux go with the old nickname "The Flickertails."

Whatever the name change is, I'll miss the Fighting Sioux name and logo. I'm a big college hockey fan and I loved the Sioux from the start in part because of the name and logo (and the fact that at the time there were no Pennsylvanian teams in the top level of college hockey, somehow).

I agree the name and logo are special. My dad played basketball at UND back in the 50's, so the Sioux name has been in our house since I can remember. It will be hard to replace, but change is inevitable.

A name that came up a few years ago was Nokota. It is the state equine for North Dakota and has a distinct North Dakota past. A guy on Siouxsports.com came up with it......http://blog.siouxsports.com/?s=nokota

I just saw a line in there that could/will start a fight between the north dakota schools.

I will be on the NDSU side for this one cause the line is pretty retarded.

I still like the Rough Riders, something historical about ND, even though the local HS has the same name. Creighton and Creighton Prep have the same nickname, Blue Jays.

I'm a strong supporter of changing the name to the Fighting Sue. Tweak the current logo a little bit to make it look like Susan B. Anthony and you're all set.
