Portland State 2-5 (1-3) vs. #8 Eastern Washington 6-2 (5-1)

Saturday, October 30 • 5:05 p.m. Pacific
Hillsboro Stadium (7,825/FieldTurf) • Hillsboro, Ore.

Webcast: http://b2tv.com/upcoming_events.asp?q=v&value=bigsky" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Series Record: PSU leads 18-13-1
Last Meeting: EWU won 47-10 in Seattle

The Vikings are coming off a 44-41 road loss at Weber State as PSU fell to 2-5 overall and 1-3 in the Big Sky. Portland State also fell to Montana 22-21 and at Montana State 44-31 after knocking off Idaho State 38-3 in its league opener.

Eastern, meanwhile has needed to come up with a huge defensive stops and offensive scores in the final minute to win its last two games over un-ranked opponents -- 28-24 over Sacramento State last week and 35-28 at Northern Colorado a week earlier.

The Eagles remain ranked eighth in this week’s Sports Network/Fathead.com top 25 NCAA Football Championship Subdivision poll. It equals Eastern's highest ranking since finishing the 2007 season ranked eighth.

“It’s the biggest game of the year -- again,” said Eastern head coach Beau Baldwin of this week’s contest, which will be followed by a bye week for EWU. “Portland State, like every team in this conference this year, is better. Portland State could have easily beaten Montana, so obviously they are a very good football team.”

“We better be ready to go and ready for a battle,” he continued. “Unless something changes, it’s probably going to take all 60 minutes to get a win. That’s what we will tell our team and try to do.”

“They’ve improved dramatically in a number of areas and Coach Burton has done a great job,” Baldwin said. “They may not have won some of the games they would have liked, but you can see the competitive level rising. I said it last week about Sac State and I can say it again about Portland State, but they can very easily have a winning record at this point in the Big Sky if a few things would have gone this way or that way. They are going to be a very tough opponent.”

As much as I'm hoping PSU wins, I don't see it happening.

Not likely. PSU defense is thin, and they wear out by the fourth quarter. One can hope, but.......

Well, I thought the same about the UNC game........and we almost sh*t the bed in that one, and against Sac. So anything can happen. I expect it to be another really close one.

Scream and Co. do a great job with the decals, adding color to the EWU game. I'll see if there is anything to add in my otherwise bland preview in providing notes from the "other side"...

Kickoff scheduled for 5pm PDT from Hillsboro Stadium as Portland State welcomes the Eastern Washington Eagles, currently ranked #8 in the TSN poll. The Eagles are led primarily by all purpose running back Taiwan Jones, however SMU transfer Bo Levi Mitchell has started to get settled in the quarterback position, after taking over for the graduated Matt Nichols. The Vikings counter with Connor Kavanaugh at quarterback, leading the pistol offense, and Cory McCaffrey is emerging as a strong counter to Kavanaugh, having run for over 100 yards in each of the Vikings FCS games this year. This will be the second time the Eagles have faced the pistol offense, having opened against Nevada, where the pistol offense originated. This game is also a return of sorts for Vikings offensive coordinator, Bruce Barnum, an alum of EWU. The winner of this game will get four points toward their total for the "Dam Cup", a running tally of various sporting events involving the Eagles and Vikings. The Eagles play their home games on newly installed red turf and so, this week, the Vikings will do the same at Hillsboro, coloring the field in the Vikings color of, well, green. :D Weather will be rain late with gametime temperatures in the 50's.

No TV in the Portland area, with both the Ducks and Blazers playing at the same time.

Portland play by play

Sidenote: The Vikings will also play the game without the "Happy Viking" on their helmet. Sounds like they did not earn it this week...

I like the helmet motivation idea. I wonder when Penn State will put their decals back on? ;)

Yep, PSU will definitely be up for this one having an opportunity to knock out a top 10 team and ruin the Eagles chance for a share of the title. Gunna be a really tough one for the Eags........plus the crappy weather is bound to favor the run-oriented offense of the Vikings.

Not the time for let-downs for EWU...."one game at a time". :thumb:

I like that story that Burton took the decal off the helmet because of sub-standard play. Wish our coach had a little fire in him. Nice hire at PSU, he's going to be a good one.
