Announced tonight on montanagrizzlies.com, Payton Candidate, SR QB, Andrew Selle career is over. Injured Should/arm this past week. Sad to see anyone's career end like this. Selle is the definition of student athlete and a great person.

The GRIZ are Roper's team rest the year.

Good luck Andrew, and thanks for all you did for the GRIZ, off and on the field. :thumb:

I take it, then, it's too late for a redshirt? Maybe a medical redshirt?

If so, this really whomps. His loyalty to the Griz program is something every program should have.

Highly unlikely he gets a medical rs. He already has a too high % of team plays. Also he is working very hard in becoming a Rhodes Scholar. He has a bright future no matter how football plays out for him. :thumb:

Dieker got a medical redshirt last year I believe and he played a decent amount?

Our Buchanan nominee Mike McElroy is out for the year as well :(

\Wouldn't matter anyways....Jordan Johnson will be starting next year for 4 years...unless he gets his RS burned this year.

Can't completely recall this, but isn't Selle the dude some of you Griz fans were complainin' about just a few weeks ago?

Also, was he the one that took you to the National Championship?

Anyways, sorry that this is how his collegiate career ends. Hope the best for him. Sounds like a good dude.

Indeed on both accounts. He was a major disappointment this year after his great season last year. Roper seems to fit Pflugrad's system much better than Selle.

That said...it still sucks to lose him that way.

Definitely sucks for any player's career to end like this, but he secured his place in Griz folklore with that touchdown pass to Sambrano against App State.

Hardship/medical redshirt
rule 14.2.4

Before the injury/illness, the player must not have “participated in more than three contests or dates of competition (whichever is applicable to that sport) or 30 percent (whichever number is greater) of the institution’s scheduled or completed contests or dates of competition.” (NCAA rule 14.2.4(c)) and the injury must have occurred in the first half of the season (14.2.4.(b)).

This hurts. :(

I've known Andrew since middle school, and we graduated high school together. I was ecstatic when I found out he was going to be a Griz, and even more so when he won the starting job last year. He worked harder than almost everyone else I've ever known.

It sucks that his career had to end like this. Coming so close to seeing your team win the National Championship, and then coming so close to winning it yourself makes it that much harder.

But with Andrew, you wouldn't even know it if you saw him. Ran into him between classes today, and if he didn't have the sling, you wouldn't know he was even injured. Isn't down on it at all, and was just as enthusiastic as ever.

I hope the team carries on with the same spirit he gave them over the last year. He'll be sorely missed in Griz Nation, and I'm thankful for everything he's done for us.

You rock, Andrew! :thumb:

So there's no chance he comes back a la Jerry Rice for the playoffs or at least the Chipper?

What playoffs? :geek:

Seriously though, sad to see this....and as GATW stated, I'll always remember him from the pass to Sambrano against App, though not for the same reasons or reverenece I imagine...... :|

Sad news, former student teacher for my brother and all-around great guy from everything I've heard.

The good news is that we are finally forced to have one 1st-string quarterback. Addition by subtraction in that regard

Having one guy taking most of the snaps may be a good turn for us from a bad situation. Last year I didn't know why we hap Roper getting so much time with an offense that Selle was very good at running. This year with the style we're running it seems like Roper can help the receivers and so forth as far as what keys they should be looking for when they get to the line. I guess we'll see in the next couple of weeks how it's gonna work out for us.

If the Griz do get things together and make a playoff run, it will be because Roper has taken the reigns and, under Pflu's offense, presumably put up pretty good numbers. Probably wouldn't be the wisest move to suddenly switch to a guy who's been on the bench for the previous 7+ games. This is how Bledsoe lost his job to Brady.

Besides that, they haven't really disclosed what kind of injury Selle sustained. It may be something that would preclude him from coming back at all or it may not.

In spite of that pass, the story is on Appfan.com and there are some very complimentary things being said about Selle.

I hate to see anyone have their playing career cut short due to injury, I remember him well from the Semis last year, he had a great game. Tough break for the Griz program.

App fans are a good group of people. I would expect them to act like that. :thumb:

Historically, the unwritten rule is that the job is the original starter's to keep when he returns from injury. That has provided problems in the past when the backup has done a decent job. Of course, that's how Wally Pipp lost HIS job. Get a headache one day, and your replacement rips off over 2K straight games. LOL.

When your back-up is at a close level to your quality, though, that rule is a bit different. If real life were a video game Roper would be a baby step behind Selle...and the way the two had played up to this point this year Roper would be above Selle.

If Charlie Batch plays well for the Pittsburgh Steelers next week there isn't going to be a (sane) person on the planet saying Charlie Batch should start for the Steelers instead of Ben Roethlisberger the following game (not an injury situation, but regardless).

If Selle is able to return from this injury it would probably only be at a time when the Griz had been carried by Roper for too long to warrant a change...Roper has been the better QB thus far this season as it is. From what I've heard from a couple students who are friends with Selle...there's no way in hell he's going to be coming back this year.

I just feel bad for Selle. By all accounts he's a great guy and he's definitely one of the better academic players in college football...I've gone through months and months of therapy before and if his injury is as bad as I've heard he's in for a hell of a time.
