2010 At-Large Playoff Elimination & Eligibility

This information is to help keep track of the playoff picture. There are 106 FCS teams for 2010. This number does not include the SWAC or Ivy League since those conferences choose to not participate in the FCS playoffs. To qualify for an at-large bid to the playoffs, a team needs a minimum of 7 Division 1 (FBS or FCS) wins. If a team is categorized as a BUBBLE team, they must win all of their remaining D1 games to be eligible for an at-large bid. If a team is categorized as ELIMINATED, they are not capable of winning 7 D1 games during this season. Last season, 27 of the eligible teams reached 7 D1 wins. This year, with the addition of two new auto bid conferences (Big South & NEC), there are also 2 additional at-large positions available.

After week 4, two teams (Lamar & Savannah State) have been eliminated. There are 19 teams that are on the bubble. Three of those teams (Eastern Illinois, Elon and Southern Illinois) participated in last year's playoffs.

Bubble Teams (19) - Butler, Campbell, Charleston Southern, Eastern Illinois, Eastern Kentucky, Elon, Howard, Idaho State, Indiana State, Nicholls State, North Carolina A&T, North Carolina Central, Presbyterian, Southern Illinois, Southern Utah, Stony Brook, Tennessee Tech, Tennessee-Martin, Valparaiso

Eliminated in Week 4 (2) - Lamar, Savannah State

The winner of the big South could possibly be 6-5 and in the playoffs... I see Stony Brook possibly being 6-5, with a win over a D2 for 5 D1 wins and in the playoffs :o Crazy huh?

Is it possible? Sure. Is it gonna happen? Not a chance :) haha

Umm, Stony Brook is unlikely to be 6-5. I see us at 7-4 at the very worst.
Final 7 games are:
Presbyterian
Coastal Carolina
Lafayette
VMI
Liberty
Charleston Southern
Gardner Webb

Would've happened last year if the Big South had an AQ. SBU was 6-5 and won the tiebreaker head-to-head. :thumb:

At SB :) Playing AT Liberty? I really just don't see it happening. If we were at SB this year I would be very concerned. The only conference game I'm semi-worried about is playing AT Coastal.

:ohno:

SBU is the best team in the conference other than LU. We should be very worried about that game, especially since it more than likely will decide the conference.

Exactly. SBU doesn't do anything great OOC, but they do get ready for the BSC schedule and they always get better as the season goes on. They'll be ready to contend for a title.

SumItUp, I think cal-davis is on the bubble...although I am not sure if South Alabama is a counter as I think they are still in transition (making them a non-counter :?: ).

They are currently 1-3 with an FBS game (a very weak SJSU team) this week.

I could use a little help.

1/ Are there any teams that are ineligible for a at-large bid? (Georgia State, South Alabama, Lamar, etc...??) I have not included South Alabama in the list of 106 teams. Currently, I have not listed any team as ineligible.
2/ Do games against Georgia State, South Alabama, ODU and Lamar count as a D-1 win? Currently, a win against these schools is considered a D1 win.

If someone has different information, please provide a source.

ODU was eligible for the playoffs last year in our inagural season (and we did reach 7 D1 wins), so I don't see why GSU and South Alabama and Lamar wouldn't be eligible.

Yes.

edit: I just looked at South Alabama's schedule and I don't think they have enough FCS opponents to qualify, so I guess they're ineligible. Lamar has eight FCS schools scheduled but already lost 2, probably disqualifying them. GSU has 1 FCS win and 6 FCS schools left on the schedule (and the BCS National Champion).

On The Bubble

Northwestern State
1-3 with the 1 win being a DII, with 7 games left

I'd also include SLU
1-3
It's a DI win but they have 7 games left and would have to go 6-1 in conference.

thanks dgreco for the info on the XSD's and Bryant.

Last year, South Dakota, North Dakota, Bryant, Central Arkansas, Winston-Salem, NC Central and Presbyterian were all ineligible due to reclassifying/provisional status.

Central Arkansas is now eligible.
Winston-Salem left D1.
Are each of the others still ineligible?

Per the NCAA Stats site
Reclassifying/Provisional
South Alabama
Georgia State
N C Central
North Dakota
Lamar
Presbyterian
Bryant
South Dakota
While UCA was reclassifying they counted as a DI win/loss for the SLC.

I don't get it. Why was ODU eligible last year while GSU and Lamar aren't because they're under "Reclassifying/Provisional?" Pretty sure those two are eligible...not sure about the others.

Lamar confuses me because they are already part of the SLC for everything else and are bringing back their football as opposed to being new to it. This tends to make me think they count, as they are not moving up from a lower division. Someone needs to clarify it for me.

Your list is a bit confusing because it leaves out the vast majority of FCS teams. Are you assuming that anyone with a win is "above" the bubble?

Yes. Anyone not listed is still at least 2 losses away from being eliminated from the playoffs. So if we lose to MSU, we will then be on the bubble with a 2-3 (1-3 D1 ) record and only 6 D1 games left for a maximum possible 7 D1 wins if the Hornets were to miraculously run the table.

I thought the SWAC did participate in the playoffs, or did that change? Last I knew, SWAC teams were eligible for the playoffs, it's just that the SWAC has tie-ins to post season games that make it unlikely (but possible) that a SWAC team could be in the playoffs.

SWAC teams remain eligible for at large selections, but the division winners meet for the SWAC title. Its unlikely a SWAC team would ever get a at large invite but they do remain eligible.
